[Message #1]
Amy Lawlor:
What is the importance of language in
the poem?
[Message #2]
Victor Eco:
hello
[Message #3]
Nikki Santiago:
hullo ebleebodee
[Message #4]
Kristina Gregorio:
hi!
[Message #5]
Paolo Gutierrez:
hi
[Message #6]
Kristina Gregorio:
"ebleebody" is from Final Fantasy X-2
[Message #7]
Victor Eco:
really? i haven't played that yet
[Message #8]
Kristina Gregorio:
the language in the poem tells the
"feel" of it
[Message #9]
Kristina Gregorio:
or wutever
[Message #10]
Kristina Gregorio:
i'm hungry
[Message #11]
Victor Eco:
feel in what way?
[Message #12]
Victor Eco:
how?
[Message #13]
Paolo Gutierrez:
helps u understand the deeper meaning of
the story or poem, something like that
[Message #14]
Kristina Gregorio:
yeah, what he said
[Message #15]
Kristina Gregorio:
what does she mean by "language"?
[Message #16]
stephen starypan:
the students are forced to speak
english. this is a forced form of
assimilation.
[Message #17]
Kristina Gregorio:
like how it is said, or the actual
words?
[Message #18]
Victor Eco:
i think the importance of language in
this poem is that it's a representation
of one's self. it's who you are and
where you come from.
[Message #19]
Kristina Gregorio:
i see...
[Message #20]
Victor Eco:
it's like the english language. new york
people speak different than down south,
and they speak different from
california. and we speak different from
the midwest. it's all how things are
represented.
[Message #21]
Kristina Gregorio:
otay, i get it now
[Message #22]
Victor Eco:
i know i don't speak english the same
way as other people do.
[Message #23]
Paolo Gutierrez:
ok, i see
[Message #24]
Victor Eco:
yep. i don't know what to say now.
[Message #25]
Kristina Gregorio:
well, in that case, language in this
poem is important because it seems to be
the general conflict in the poem, it is
called "Tongue Tied"
[Message #26]
Kristina Gregorio:
the spelling of "TONGUE" sure is wierd
[Message #27]
Kristina Gregorio:
weird
[Message #28]
Paolo Gutierrez:
ya weird...
[Message #29]
Paolo Gutierrez:
dont know wat to say anymore
[Message #30]
Victor Eco:
i guess since the priests in the school
want things a certain way they shun the
use of other languages and they punish
over it. so the main character is
"tongue tied" in a sense that he feels
that his identity through language
should be spoken but is conflicted since
he knows he's going to get punished.
[Message #31]
Victor Eco:
tongue... tung... tongue... tung...
[Message #32]
Kristina Gregorio:
so his indentity is also gonna be
punished because his language is his
identity, like I said
[Message #33]
Kristina Gregorio:
TOTAL ASSIMILATION
[Message #34]
Paolo Gutierrez:
exactly
[Message #35]
Victor Eco:
yeah pretty much
[Message #36]
Kristina Gregorio:
Reading things like this sometimes get
me all heated
[Message #37]
Victor Eco:
hehehe how so?
[Message #38]
candice bernardino:
I forgot which group i am
[Message #39]
candice bernardino:
hello
[Message #40]
Kristina Gregorio:
well, i guess it's the whole repression
thing
[Message #41]
Victor Eco:
hi hehe i don't think you're in this
group candice
[Message #42]
Kristina Gregorio:
it's not fair that he is punished cuz he
doesn't speak perfect english, that sux
[Message #43]
Kristina Gregorio:
but then again, is this skool in the
states or the P.I.?
[Message #44]
Victor Eco:
i think it's in the PI
[Message #45]
Amy Lawlor:
what is the context in which the
narrator removed from his language?
[Message #46]
Kristina Gregorio:
HUH?!
[Message #47]
Paolo Gutierrez:
i think its a catholic school in the
phils
[Message #48]
Victor Eco:
hahaha
[Message #49]
Kristina Gregorio:
i don't get the question dude....
[Message #50]
Paolo Gutierrez:
i know
[Message #51]
Amy Lawlor:
good question
[Message #52]
Paolo Gutierrez:
i think that its his identity which was
removed
[Message #53]
Victor Eco:
is it on the top of page 142? where he
says, "A reminder for all who could hear
of the rule you had to follow and the
language we could not speak." ?
[Message #54]
Amy Lawlor:
In terms of context, I'm asking you what
the situation was surrounding his
incident with his teacher. For
instance, where are they? What kind of
school? Who was the priest? When does
this story take place?
[Message #55]
Victor Eco:
oh
[Message #56]
Kristina Gregorio:
ahhh.....ok
[Message #57]
Kristina Gregorio:
stephen...u still there?
[Message #58]
stephen starypan:
catholic school is sort of like the
army, they break you, then rebuild you
into what they(the brithers), want you
to be.
[Message #59]
Kristina Gregorio:
they are in skool in the P.I.; it is a
Catholic skool; and it takes place in a
Catholic skool in the P.I.! haha
[Message #60]
Kristina Gregorio:
is it like brainwash?
[Message #61]
Victor Eco:
hmm... regarding to history i assume
that the priest could be spanish or
american maybe?
[Message #62]
Kristina Gregorio:
i think american...cuz the spaniards
brought in spanish then the americans
came into the skools to "erase" and
build english in there everyday lives,
like stephen said, "military skool"
[Message #63]
Victor Eco:
i c
[Message #64]
Paolo Gutierrez:
what kind of school... some sort of
catholic school run by Jesuites,
Dominicans, that sort of thing. i went
to school like that, but not that strict
Priest? Brothers...they are like priest
but their main purpose is education
[Message #65]
Kristina Gregorio:
so, wannabe priests who couldn't cut it,
so they're taking it out on the
filipinos?
[Message #66]
stephen starypan:
priests, brothers nuns, all add up to no
fun.
[Message #67]
Victor Eco:
that sorta rhymes.
[Message #68]
Kristina Gregorio:
yeah!
[Message #69]
Kristina Gregorio:
my mom's religion doesn't believe in
priests, they are believed to be "false
prophets"
[Message #70]
Paolo Gutierrez:
well being a brother is harder than a
priest...since brothers take vows and
all same as a priest, they also have to
be highly educated. like lawyers,
business, master degrees
[Message #71]
Paolo Gutierrez:
what religion is that?
[Message #72]
Kristina Gregorio:
oh, ok, don't mind me, i'm just bitter
about the poem
[Message #73]
Paolo Gutierrez:
hehe
[Message #74]
Kristina Gregorio:
hney victor, where you at?
[Message #75]
Kristina Gregorio:
drop some knowledge on us...whatchu
think?
[Message #76]
stephen starypan:
no matter what they are, priests,
ministers, or monks, they are still only
human with the same desires you or i
have.
[Message #77]
Victor Eco:
right hurr
[Message #78]
Victor Eco:
i dunno what to drop knowledge on
[Message #79]
Kristina Gregorio:
k bye!
[Message #80]
Victor Eco:
all i know is life in america. no clue
what the PI is like and how catholic
schools are hehehe
[Message #81]
Victor Eco:
ok, later people.
PEACE OUT!
