[Message #2]
Justin Junio:
yes tomato is a fruit

[Message #3]
Virtue Santos:
Hah

[Message #4]
Dominic Manuel:
That's a nice name..."Virtue"

[Message #5]
Virtue Santos:
Thanks.

[Message #6]
candice bernardino:
hi

[Message #7]
Virtue Santos:
Wassup.

[Message #8]
Dominic Manuel:
hi. I think the transformation begins right about on page 46...towards the bottom

[Message #9]
Virtue Santos:
I agree.

[Message #10]
Dominic Manuel:
of Nelda and Milagros

[Message #11]
Dominic Manuel:
You know, when those people try to punk on Nelda

[Message #12]
Virtue Santos:
Yup. (even though I wasn't here)

[Message #13]
Dominic Manuel:
Where it says "Leave Nelda alone,"

[Message #14]
candice bernardino:
one of the conflicts starts in the middle of page 42 (Milagros compliments from the family)

[Message #15]
Dominic Manuel:
Yes...I agree

[Message #16]
Virtue Santos:
Okay, what happened?

[Message #17]
candice bernardino:
Don't you think that Nelda was jealous of Milagros?

[Message #18]
Dominic Manuel:
The family was hella bragging about Milagros

[Message #19]
Dominic Manuel:
and I think Nelda got jealous.....ooooooooo

[Message #20]
Dominic Manuel:
Complimenting her

[Message #21]
Dominic Manuel:
is that right?

[Message #22]
Dominic Manuel:
...?

[Message #23]
candice bernardino:
yeah you're right ..
hahah.. I know she was, but Nelda wasn't trippen yet

[Message #24]
Dominic Manuel:
oh ic

[Message #25]
Dominic Manuel:
when did she start trippin?

[Message #26]
candice bernardino:
the only reason Nelda started trippen was because Milagros won't speak to her

[Message #27]
Dominic Manuel:
oh yeah

[Message #28]
Dominic Manuel:
sorry...im trippin

[Message #29]
Dominic Manuel:
What do you guys think about the questions

[Message #30]
candice bernardino:
I think that the reason Milagros wasn't talking to Nelda was because she didn't know how to speak english very well.

[Message #31]
Virtue Santos:
They're hard.

[Message #32]
Dominic Manuel:
that's true

[Message #33]
Dominic Manuel:
i kinda also think that she didn't really want to move to the US in the first place and that might have been a reason

[Message #34]
Dominic Manuel:
you know, how she kept writing to her friends in the Philippines...

[Message #35]
candice bernardino:
yeah you're right Dominic

[Message #36]
Dominic Manuel:
but, her lack of ability to speak english is also a big factor too... : )

[Message #37]
Dominic Manuel:
where do you guys think Milagros had a transformation?

[Message #38]
candice bernardino:
You know how Milagros wasn't talking to Nelda... and it seem like she didn't want anything to do with her,
later on when Nelda was getting teased by the boys about her bra stuffing, Milagros helped her out and threw rocks at them.

[Message #39]
Dominic Manuel:
yes

[Message #40]
Dominic Manuel:
I think that was the point were both of them actually were starting to go through a transformation

[Message #41]
Dominic Manuel:
I think that might have been the key event

[Message #42]
Dominic Manuel:
It opened the lines of communication between them

[Message #43]
candice bernardino:
Milagros showed some kind of caring for her and that was the first time they actually started talking all nice to each other

[Message #44]
Dominic Manuel:
sorta...broke the ice

[Message #45]
Dominic Manuel:
i think...

[Message #46]
candice bernardino:
yup!

[Message #47]
Dominic Manuel:
What do you guys think about Victor's transformation...?

[Message #48]
Dominic Manuel:
I think it was when they found out he was bussing tables

[Message #49]
Dominic Manuel:
I think he felt as if he had made a bad decision on moving to the states

[Message #50]
Dominic Manuel:
He felt as if he had let his family down

[Message #51]
Dominic Manuel:
He had tried the whole time to assure his family that it would be ok

[Message #52]
Dominic Manuel:
and that America was the land of opportunity

[Message #53]
Dominic Manuel:
but he was actually having a hard time

[Message #54]
Dominic Manuel:
i think the key turning point was that moment, and then when he went home and cried hella hard

[Message #55]
Dominic Manuel:
i think....

[Message #56]
candice bernardino:
Victor was too optimistic about the whole job search and he was kind of a show off
I guess he was just disappointed about the whole expectation of America.. later on he cried that night.

[Message #57]
Dominic Manuel:
yes...good point

[Message #58]
Dominic Manuel:
What about the themes....?

[Message #59]
Dominic Manuel:
(cough)

[Message #60]
Dominic Manuel:
what do you guys think..?

[Message #61]
Justin Junio:
1

[Message #62]
Justin Junio:
2

[Message #63]
Justin Junio:
3

[Message #64]
candice bernardino:
, yeah I heard... (cough).. hehe Oh yeah you know how Nelda was really cool in the beginning, and she was showing good hospitality toward Milagros, later on I guess she got fed up with her and fought her.. heheh.. (Transformation of Nelda)

[Message #65]
Dominic Manuel:
Yep...!

[Message #66]
candice bernardino:
hmmm.. Theme?

[Message #67]
Dominic Manuel:
Maybe....Family values, two different worlds forced to combine,

[Message #68]
Dominic Manuel:
culture shock

[Message #69]
Dominic Manuel:
setting aside differences.?

[Message #70]
candice bernardino:
I don't know maybe.. high expectation, and disappointments

[Message #71]
Dominic Manuel:
yes

[Message #72]
Dominic Manuel:
struggles of immigrants?

[Message #73]
Amy Lawlor:
going back to Victor's transformation--
you guys mention his acceptance of the job bussing tables after looking very hard for a better job, but how is he changed by that acceptance? What in the text shows he is a different person from when he got to America?

[Message #74]
candice bernardino:
Whatever he was doing in the Philippines, it was not easily acceptable in the US, for example when he was a lawyer, he thought that he'd become a lawyer in America too

[Message #75]
candice bernardino:
You know how immigrants think that America is the land of opportunity.. well, that was what Victor thought when he got to America.. he didn't realize that it is a struggle to get what you want or what you want to become.

[Message #76]
Dominic Manuel:
I think that there is a diffinite contrast between what Victor's demeanor was like when he first arrived in America, and after he had to accept his situation.

[Message #77]
candice bernardino:
yup.

[Message #78]
Dominic Manuel:
Themes...

[Message #79]
candice bernardino:
Themes....

[Message #80]
Dominic Manuel:
yes...

[Message #81]
Virtue Santos:

[Message #82]
Dominic Manuel:

Dominic Manuel:

[Message #86]
Dominic Manuel:
I was dying...

[Message #120]
candice bernardino:
uhhmm. okay.. The narrator was the neice of Tita Augustina which was the wild American Filipino
Tita Augustina's neice was somehow becoming as wild as she was when Tita Augustina was still teenager.
The family had many rules to follow and somewhat religious. they talked about god and morals, virginity and everything.
Whenever she would do something bad her parents would tell that she'll be sent to the P.I.
Tita Augustina fell in love with Gabriel and one day she locked herself in her bedroom and didn't want to come out.
Gabriel wanted her to open the door, but she didn't want anyone to know. I'm thinking because she got pregnant.
... Dominic,, read page 81 the last two paragraph.

[Message #121]
Dominic Manuel:
wow...crazy...thanks
