The Internet

Information in the Digital Age

E-Mail

  • Address
    • Internet Protocol (IP) address
      • Every server connected to the Internet has a 4 parts IP address. For example: 140.147.248.7
    • Domain Name System (DNS)
      • For convenience, the DNS was created to associate each numerical IP address with an abbreviated name. For example the IP address 140.147.248.7 has an easier to remember DNS : www.loc.gov.
        • Top level domain -- It appears at the end of an address; in the DNS www.loc.gov, gov is the top level domain. The top level domain identifies the types of organizations; for example:
          • .arts Artistic and cultural institutions
          • .edu Educational and research sites
          • .firm General businesses
          • .com Commercial (business) sites
          • .gov Government nonmilitary sites
          • .info Information services
          • .int International organizations
          • .mil U.S. military branches
          • .org Nonprofit organizations
          • .net Network organizations, network access providers
          • .nom Individuals
          • .rec Recreation, entertainment
          • .store Online shopping services
          • .web Web-related activities
          • .us Country code for the United States
        • Subdomain -- it identifies the location of the mail server (or the host). For example:
          • lcweb.lc.gov-- This Library of Congress DNS tells us where the server lcweb is actually located. lc is the Library of congress.
        • Server name (host name) -- the name of the Internet computer.
    • E-Mail address -- example;
      • president@whitehouse.gov
      • An e-mail address is separated by the @ sign into two parts; the username on the left of the @ sign, and the server name (or host name) and domain name on the right of the @ sign.
  • Functions of e-mail programs
    • Display incoming mails
    • Save mails
    • Print mails
    • Reply to a mail
    • Compose and send new mails
    • Import/export mails
