Internet Etiquette


  • Email etiquette
    • Provide subject heading
    • Make your message short and precise
    • Include part of an original message when you reply
    • Provide your name at the end of the message
    • Double check the address before you send your message
    • Avoid insulting anybody, remember that your email could be forwarded to anybody
  • Listserv etiquette
    • Be sure your message go to the right address
      • Administrative address -- the address to subscribe or unsubscribe to the list, and to get help regarding your subscription (by commands).
      • List owner or moderator's address -- you may find this address in the "Welcome" message when you subscribe to a list. This address is for you to report problems or ask questions that computer administrator can not answer.
      • List address -- the address that delivers messages to all the members of the group.
      • Individual's address -- when you receive a message from a member of the list, the member's address is on the message. Do not reply to the list address if is a personal message.
    • Be polite -- you may be communicating with people from all over the world, so be sensitive to others' culture and religion. Remember that sending messages to a listserv is a public act.
  • Usenet etiquette
    • Follow the rules of the Usenet
    • Post your messages to the right newsgroup
    • Be discreet
