Basic Clean Air Car Course

 

About This Class:

Auto 772 is designed to cover some of the Smog Check Program information you will need to pass the Smog Check Technician License Exam.  It also meets one of the requirements for a new smog license. If you wish to become a licensed Smog Check technician it is recommended you contact the Automotive Department at 650-738-4485 to discuss licensing requirements and course prerequisites required by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. It's best to do this before you register for the class.
 
Prerequisite: You must have 1 year experience or education in Engine Performance to take this class.

Notice: You must pass ODBII class with Rick Escalambre to receive BAR credit for the Basic Clean Air Car course. Fill out an add slip in class or Email Rick at skysmog@aol.com (or call 650-738-4410) to register for this class.

Required Textbook is the Clean Air Car Course Set, available from the tool room for $28.00.

To meet the BAR requirements to get your smog license application stamped off that you have completed the Basic Clean Air Car course is different than just getting a passing grade from the college.  To satisfy the BAR requirements for this Basic Clean Air Car course you must have the prerequisite one year of education or experience in automotive engine performance and attend all of the 48 hours of the class. Some makeup time may be done only when arranged ahead of time.

Outline

We will cover the following subject matter:
1. Smog Technician License Requirements – Study requirements to obtain Intern, Basic, and Advances Emission Specialist Smog licenses and what duties they qualify you to do.
2. Automotive Emissions – An overview of why we have a smog program and what emissions we are attempting to control.
3. Emission Control Devices – A general review of the different devices used to control emissions, how they function, and how do we test if they are properly working or not.
4. Vehicle Identification – Identify which vehicles should have which emission devices.
5. Visual Inspection – Practice inspecting vehicles to see if they have the required emission control devices and identifying which code words to use to properly tell the smog machine (the TAS) the condition of those devices on the vehicle.
6. Rules and Regulations – Survey of Inspection Manual and applicable laws.
7. 2003 Update Training – BAR training on rules and regulations.
8. Operation of the Test Analyzer System (TAS) and Performing the Emissions Test – Learning to use the smog machine (TAS) for Smog Checks and manual testing of vehicles.  Also how to maintain the machine and deal with some problems.
9. Complying with Obligations to Consumers – What procedures, laws and rights protect the consumer and how to conduct business within those laws.

Grades

Your workload will consist of reading, homework, lab assignments, quizzes, and two final exams.  Tests will include questions based on homework, lectures, videos, and demos.  Your grade will depend on attendance, homework, lab work, quizzes and the final exams.

The Instructor reserves the right to adjust grades 10% based on attitude and personal application.
