- What is electricity –
Basics of electron flow, water theory, volts, amps, and ohms.
- Types of electrical circuits
– series, parallel, series parallel.
- Principles of electricity
– Series circuit rules, parallel circuit rules, Ohm’s
law, and voltage drop (Kirchoff’s law).
- Electrical Test Equipment
– Measuring electricity with a test light, logic probe, and
DVOM (Digital Volt Ohm Meter.) Also units of measurement, symbols, and
conversions necessary for measurement.
- Electrical Components
– Switches, relays, solenoids, resistors, diodes, fuses and
circuit breakers.
- Types of Circuit Problems
– Opens, shorts, grounds and high resistance. And diagnosing
them with DVOM, logic probe, jumper wire or test light.
- Repairing Wires and Connectors
– How to properly solder wires, replace terminals and connectors.
- Battery – Theory,
operation and testing.
- Starter motors –
Theory, operation and testing.
- Charging systems –
Theory, operation and testing.
Your Textbook is
Principles of Electricity and Electronics for the Automotive Technician,
by Norm Chapman, and is available at the college bookstore.
Your workload will consist
of reading, lab assignments, quizzes, and a final exam. Tests will
include questions based on homework, lectures, videos, and demos. Your grade
will depend on attendance, lab work, quizzes, and a final exam.
