Engine Performance

Auto 793 will cover the following subject matter:

Prerequisite: We recommend basic auto knowledge, such as covered in Auto 710 (Fundamentals of Auto Mechanics).

Auto 793 will cover the following subjects, not necessarily in this order:

  1. Big Four – What it takes to make an engine run
  2. Exhaust Analysis – Pollution, good and bad combustion, what the machine measures, what the gases mean, examples and lab practice.
  3. Engine Operation – The basic four stroke cycle, understanding vacuum, pressure and temperature conditions under basic modes of operation, normal and abnormal combustion.
  4. Engine Testing – Cranking and running vacuum testing, cranking and running compression testing, cylinder balance testing, leakdown testing.
  5. Timing Belts – How to suspect and find problems, testing for free play and proper position, how to change.
  6. Air Induction systems – Turbocharger, supercharger, throttle body sludge, variable intake runner control.
  7. Exhaust systems – pressure testing and diagnosis.
  8. Fuel systems – Circuit examples, diagnosis, relays and amp testing. Fuel quality, pressure testing, flow testing, and leakdown testing.
  9. Ignition systems – Primary and secondary basics, spark testing, leakage testing, timing theory and testing.
  10. No-Start Diagnosis – Testing for the Big Four, fuel, spark, timing, injector but no spark, no spark or injector, primary ignition but no secondary, etc…

Your workload will consist of reading and homework, lab assignments,  quizzes, and a final exam. Tests will include questions based on homework, lectures, videos, and demos.

Your grade will depend on attendance, lab work, quizzes, and a final exam.

Class fees: $90.00 for A8 Alternative textbook Engine Performance by C.I.A.T., testing fees and lab fees. Please make check payable to “Skyline Auto Tech Club”.

A8 Alternative Certification will be offered in this class. You must attend 24 relevant class hours, participate in lab, complete homework, and pass the C.I.A.T. final exam. This certification is separate from your college class grade and not affiliated with ASE.
