Fuel Pressure Worksheet

1.      Locate the two closest fire extinguishers.  (Remember, pull the pin and squeeze the handle to spray at the base of the flame if you have to use it.) Write down where they are: _________________________________________________

2.    Look up Fuel Pressure specifications for the vehicle you are testing. Write specs down here: _________________________________

3.     Use eye protection. Relieve fuel pressure by  1) removing fuel pump (circuit opening) relay  or fuse and running engine till it stops, 2) opening fuel line at some pressure point and catching fuel in a shop rag—beware there may be lots of fuel. When done check here:  ____

4.    Attach fuel pressure gauge and notice which scale on the gauge you will be using. Briefly turn key on or start vehicle, then turn it off. Check for fuel leaks. Are there leaks? Yes ____ No ____ If there are leaks you must correct them and retest before continuing. If you need help, ask !

5.     Measure the fuel pressure with the key on, engine off. Record it here: __________ (also record the units you are using, psi, bar, Kpa, etc…)

6.    Measure the fuel pressure with the engine idling. Watch the pressure for a couple of minutes, it may come down if the engine is not warmed up yet.  Record pressure here: __________

7.     Measure the fuel pressure when you do a momentary wide open throttle acceleration.  Record the pressure here: __________

8.    With the engine idling, disconnect and plug the vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator. Record pressure here: __________

9.    Turn off the engine, and watch the fuel pressure for five minutes. Record your residual or rest pressure here: __________

10.            For some problems, you may need to test the pressure when the engine is driving under a load, or on a dyno under a load.
