Final Essay for The Arts, The Senses and The Imagination (HUM 117)

The purpose of this final essay is to reflect on the material covered in the course in order to reinforce it in your memory. Review your class assignments, your class notes, the class notes posted on the web (http://www.smccd.net/accounts/mecklerd/ASI/journal2008spr_ASI.htm), your Engagement reviews, and perhaps browse through the Ackerman book as your prepare your answers.

For each of the senses, describe the distance between perception and the imagination, and evaluate how much language can and cannot capture about that sense. For which sense was this course most successful in increasing your awareness? Least successful?

Evaluation:

A = clear organization, with a strong opening and a thoughtful conclusion; comments on all senses and their corresponding art forms and relationship to language

A+ = all of the above, with particularly clear, expressive and beautiful writing that reflects a well informed personal point of view. (15 points)

B = comments on all senses and their corresponding art forms; only a few writing problems

C = comments on several senses and their corresponding art forms; several writing problems

D = incomplete and many writing problems

F = incomplete and severe writing problems, but it’s worth turning something in for 7 points
