The 12-Step Session

Step 2: Identify Tasks
Let the Student identify the learning tasks he or she wants to work on. Then have the
Student
choose ONE.
- Tutor:
- How's stats going this week?
- Student:
- Ugh! I may be a student, but I
still can't figure out the student's t-test.
- Tutor:
- You sound frustrated.
- Student:
- I am.
- Tutor:
- So, it's the t-test today?
- Student:
- Well...I'm still not sure about
chi-square. Although I get that better than the t-test.
- Tutor:
- It's best to work only on one
thing at a time. What would you like to work on?
- Student:
- I'd better get solid on chi-square
since that's going to be on the next test. The t-test can wait.
Notice that the Tutor's response included a
statement of empathy ("You sound frustrated").
