What is The Tutorial Assistance Program?
Skyline's Tutorial Assistance Program assists students who do not
feel confident of their ability to succeed, either in a specific course
or in a general area of academic skills. Through its services, students
are provided with academic assistance in coursework and study skills--via
tutoring.
What is tutoring?
Tutoring is not teaching. Tutoring is helping another student clarify the areas in his or her understanding of a subject that are unclear, confused, or that simply need practice. The student is tutored to the point where he or she can function in the course independently. Tutoring is an individualized, personal experience; its positive results are due to the relationship between individuals. It enhances the student's self-image and improves his or her attitude toward learning.
Who can be tutored?
The Tutorial Assistance Program is open to all students of Skyline College. There is no charge for this service. It is recommended that students participating in the Tutorial Assistance Program enroll in the appropriate course, Learning Skills 801LSKL 801 or Learning Skills 110Learning Skills 110. See your counselor for more information or contact, Felix Perez in Room 5105M or call 738-4140.
How is tutoring carried out?
In the Tutorial Assistance Program there are several methods of tutorial
assistance:
1. Study groups
2. In class tutoring
3. Drop in tutoring
4. Teacher assistance
5. Study Skills & Basic Computer Literacy modules
How to apply for assistance: If you need help in a course, do not wait
until you fall behind. Come to the Tutorial Assistance Program in Building
5, room 5100 and submit an application. In most cases you may see a tutor
right away; if no tutor is immediately available in the subject with which
you need assistance, the application will be processed and you will be
scheduled for a tutorial within a day or two.
How to apply to be a tutor: If you would like to be a tutor, submit your
application to the Tutorial Assistance Program in Room 5105M (in the TLC)
indicating the subject in which you are qualified to tutor. In addition,
set up an appointment for an interview with the Tutorial Coordinator,
Felix Perez. If you are qualified and would like to earn college credit
for your work as a tutor, you may enroll in LSKL 110, the Tutor Training
course.
For further information on the Tutorial Assistance Program, check with
the Tutorial Assistance Program Coordinator, Felix
Perez in Room 5105M or call 738-4140.
