Course Information

We use a standard first-year French text, the fourth edition of Vis-à-vis, by Amon, Muyskens and Omaggio Hadley, accompanied by a workbook/lab manual. Listening material is available on line and on CDs in the college's Foreign Language Center, Building 18, Room 112. There is also a DVD that accompanies the text which is available for purchase in the bookstore or elsewhere. You can learn more about the book and the ancillary materials at the publisher's Web site

The Web site contains additional information as well as useful grammar and other exercises.

If you are coming from French 110 or 112, you should already have the textbook and workbook. If you have trouble accessing on-line materials, staff in the FLC should be able to help you.

Students in 120 will begin with Chapter 9 (after a review of the earlier chapters); students in 122 will begin about three-fourths of the way through, near the end of Chapter 12. Everyone will study the materials through to the end of the text, Chapter 16.

Class activities include speaking, listening, writing and editing on the board, role playing, practicing pronunciation, and other activities to let you become comfortable using French. Homework includes writing, some of which involves doing exercises in response to listening materials. As time permits, we supplement these activities with other audio, video, and reading materials, games, and enrichment activities. Study of French and Francophone culture is an integral part of this course.

Course grades are based on grades for homework, classwork, quizzes, and tests, and participation and regular attendance are factored into the course grades .In class, I give out more specific information on grading.
