| READING & WRITING |
Reading: In this class, you will read one non-fiction text (Farewell to Manzanar; 203 pages) in addition to other shorter pieces of writing. In order to keep up with the class, you should plan to read approximately 35 pages each week and budget additional time to write in your reading journal immediately afterward. Please do not get behind in the reading as it is difficult to catch up if you do. If you struggle with the readings, ask me for help immediately. If you are not confident in your reading comprehension skills (ability to infer meaning and vocabulary from context) and reading speed, I recommend you take READ 825 or 830 before you take ESL 828 to help ensure your success in this course. READ 812 provides additional reading assistance.
Essays: 1) You will be required to submit rough drafts for your essays before each final due date. Please bring your “working” draft to each class as I will often give class time to work on your writing. 2) When I conduct a Peer Review session, you will be required to bring multiple copies of your “nearly” final draft to class so other students may read and give you feedback. I will announce Peer Review sessions so you can make photocopies or print multiple copies of your essay before you arrive to class. 3) When you turn in the final draft of an essay, you must include all drafts and place your final, clean copy on top. The final copy should be type-written in 12-point Times (or similar font) and double-spaced with 1-inch margins. Please include page numbers.
