Career in Teaching

 
  • 1959--61:  Washington High School, Fremont, Calif.  Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, advanced algebra.  Introduced, with colleague Constantine Kazarinoff, the curriculum of the School Mathematics Study Group (SMSG).


  • 1962--67 and summers 1967-- 70: 
    Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona (Instructor in mathematics). Various courses in pre-calculus mathematics, calculus, courses of special topics in mathematics for candidates in credential programs for elementary and secondary school.  Special courses in mathematics for in-service teachers in National Science Foundation (NSF) institutes, under direction of Lehi Smith. Curriculum advisor for mathematics majors in credential programs.

  • 1967--2000:  College of San Mateo, San Mateo, CA. (Full-time faculty) Mathematics, computer programming, earth systems.  Courses include calculus; differential equations; linear algebra; various pre-calculus mathematics courses including arithmetic in the elementary school,  mathematics anxiety; variousprogramming languages; program design; introduction to data processing,  introduction to GIS and GPS applications.  Various projects and curriculum development activities, among them the development, with Michael Burke, of textbook Arithmetic with suite of programs for generating tests and quizzes; development, with William Griffiths, of text and course materials for a course in computer program (algorithm) design; development of course-management and test-generating software for CWETA (California Worksite Education and Training Act) project for training in electronics, directed by James Petromilli and Robert Kallejian; NASA funded project, directed by Kenneth Kennedy and in cooperation with Jay Skiles of NASA, for development of introductory curriculum in image-processing, GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and GPS (Global Positioning System)

  • 2000--?:  Currently involved in MEWS, a special project that is a cooperative among the San Mateo Foster City School District (SMFCSD), the San Mateo Union High School District , the San Mateo Chamber of Commerce and College of San Mateo.  This is a year-long project in mathematics for teachers in elementary schools, currently for teachers in the SMFCSD.
