Informal Education

Other aspects of my life not part of  my formal education, including but not restricted to, and not necessarily in order of occurrence or significance,

  • A childhood in rural Southern California.  My family lived mostly in rural settings, first in the then-sparsely populated northern San Fernando Valley and then in Pico Canyon in the hills west of Newhall, now part of Valencia.
  • Care and feeding of domestic and farm animals
  • Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4H Club
  • U.S. Government sponsored physical fitness and diversity training, i.e., a three-year hitch in the U.S. Army.  I also learned to copy Morse Code in various degrees of preoccupation, consciousness, comfort and signal quality.
  • Enjoyment of many kinds of music
  • Learning to use tools for woodwork, auto repair, electronics repair, fence-building, gardening, etc.
  • Occasional travel
  • Recreational reading and study in many directions
  • Joys and challenges of grandparenthood, parenthood, and spousehood
  • Cooperative activity with colleagues in my career of first choice, i.e., teaching
  • Learning from my students
  • Long walks
  • The beach
  • Live theater
  • Good talk
  • Gardening
  • Lots more
