Course Description: Introductory psychology course designed to examine principles of learning, theories of personality, uses for tests and measurements, behavioral disorders, mental health theories, developmental aspects of individuals, and social psychology. Students study experimental designs, research data, and their social implications. (CAN PSY 2) (CSU, UC)

 

Course Objective: To introduce psychology as a discipline and to trace its historical roots. Additionally, to identify psychology’s most important issues; to describe the different perspectives from which psychologist examine behavior and mental processes; and to identify psychology’s important subfields.

Online Sessions

The eCOLLEGE Website contains course information to reinforce weekly chapter topics for this course. Review the Course Home on eCOLLEGE for each weeks assignment and to review the PSYC 100 course syllabus. On the website your will be able to determine which chapter assignments you should complete online each week. You will complete a chapter Quiz weekly.

 

·         Weekly Chapter Quizzes must be completed no later than 11PM (PST) on Friday. No makeup quizzes will be given regardless of the reason.

 

Course Requirements:

 

1.        Library Assignment: There will be a required assignment for you to complete and an online test for this library assigment. You will learn how to use the online library resources at Canada College and learn APA (American Psychology Association) writing format. The dates for this assignment will be posted on eCollege.

 

2.        Quizzes. You will be required to complete weekly online quizzes as assigned. Chapter quizzes are accessed through eCOLLEGE website. You must use the student ID to log on to the course. Access the course by click on eCOLLEGE .

 

  1. Examinations. There will be a Final Exam. The final exam will be taken online during the week scheduled for final exams this spring semester. The Final exam will consist of 100 questions. The test items will be taken primarily from the textbook reading assignments, however, you can expect some test questions from lectures and online activities.
  2. Discussion Board Assignments/Activities.. Online written activities will be assigned weekly on the discussion board or as activities. These assignments must be posted online weekly by the scheduled due date.. Submission of late assignments will result in a reduced number of points or no points. Online assignments can be accessed through eCOLLEGE website. You must Enroll into the site once you have registered for WebAccess.

 

  1. Writing Assignment. Two types of writing assignments will be required for this course.

Journal Article Review: You are required to write summation of one Psychology journal article. The summary is to be no more than two pages with a title page, reference page, and a copy of the article must be attached. Journal, newsletter, or magazine articles must be peer review and your summary of the article must be written in APA style.

  Autobiolography:You are required to complete a 3-6 page autobiography. This paper should include psychological and physiological aspects of the student’s life that reflects major influences in shaping who they are today. Was it your mother, father or both parental influences, close relationship with siblings or friends that helped construct your present personality and being today? You will need to apply at least one construct or psychological principle (e.g., maturation; personality theory) to this autobiography that you will have learned through the course of this class. A photo (photocopy) of you reflecting some significant time in your life must be included. This assignment is to be word processed and single-spaced. Other guidelines for this paper will be discussed online.

 

  1. Extra –Credit. There will be no extra credit assigned in this course.

 

  1. Final:   All students are expected to take the final examination. It will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions. Failure to take the final examination will result in a failing grade for the semester.

 

  1. Attendance. To do well in this course, class attendance and participation is expected weekly. Student are expected to post online on the discussion board. Students will learn to intellectually process information actively and skillfully, will engage in conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing and or evaluating information, concepts and constructs not otherwise achieved from lecture or readings.

 

                       

Grading

 

Grades will be based on the following criteria.

 

o         Online Chapter Exit Exams                                  300 points

o         Online Discussion Board Question                        300 points

o         Journal Article                                                    100 points

o         Autobiography                                                   200 points

o         Final Examination                                              100  points

 

      Total Points                                                   1000 points

               

Grading Percentages

            90-100%  =  A

            75-89%    =  B

            50-74%    =  C

            30-49%    =  D

       Below 29%    =  F

 

Important Policies:

 

Students take sole and complete responsibility for withdrawal procedures from this course.

Attendance is taken weekly from discussion board postings and quizzes. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

All examinations must be taken at the regularly scheduled times. Communicate with the professor before exam about problems. There are no make-up examinations.

The Professor will retain all exams, papers, and records of cumulative points for six weeks into the succeeding semester, if the student wishes to question their course grade. After that period, all student course materials will be discarded.
