TEST TAKING


 

Preparing for an exam

 

Review periodically during the semester rather than cramming just before an examination.

Highlight notes or rewrite key points in the book margin that might be test questions.

 

Start studying for our final exam the first day of class. If you say current with our assignments, you should be able to pass a test without reviewing. Reviewing is to achieve a better grade.

 

Prepare and begin to review material at least four days before the exam.

 

Review all notes, handouts and tests. Pay attention to what our teacher says is important to know. Sometimes a teacher tells you exactly where to look fir test information

 

Go over previous quizzes and test to correct previous errors.

 

DonÕt fool yourself into thinking that you understand something when you really do not. Ask before the exam day.

 

Look at a test as a chance to show what you have learned.

 

Eat lightly, or eat light foods, more than an hour before the test

 

DonÕt take drugs or drink too much coffee

 

What questions will be on the exam?

 

 

Ask the instructor what type of questions will be used, which information will be covered, and how long the test will be.

 

Information from previous quizzes usually ends up on Tests.

 

Listen to information repeated several times, questions the teacher poses to students, gesture or pauses showing your interest is emphasizing information and when the instructors says,: This information and when the instructors says, Ō this will be on the test.Õ

 

 

When Taking am examÉÉÉ..

 

 

Arrive at least 10 minutes early.

 

Try to relax. To reduce anxiety, breathe deeply and slowly. Remind yourself that it is normal to be nervous when sitting down to take a test.

 

Sit away from friends who might distract youŃdonÕt let others writing furiously make you nervous.

 

Read all directions carefully.

 

Skim the entire exam first to get an idea of what material is being asked for and how the test itself is organized.

 

Check the clock:  pace yourself and plan your time wisely. Note which questions are given most point value and which are most difficult. Questions given more points should be allotted more time. 

 

Use an erasable pen when answering essay and fill in questions.

 

It is common to panic when you see a difficult question or something you donÕt know.

 

DonÕt be discouraged if you see a lot of questions you canÕt answers.

 

Answer questions you know first. After you relax more and look over the test, information you could not recall may come to you.

 

If you do not know the answer, skip it and come back.

 

If you donÕt know an answer and there is not penalty for guessing, go ahead and guess.

 

Question any items when you arenÕt sure whatÕs being asked  (if allowed in class).

 

 On test, first impressions are usually correct; play hunches.

 

DonÕt change answers unless you are absolutely sure theyÕre wrong.

 

DonÕt spend time on what you donÕt know.

 

 

Some true/false, multiple choice, and /or matching questions may provide you answers to essay question.

 

DonÕt worry if others finish before youŃfinishing first doesnÕt guarantee the best grade.

 

Use all the time allocated for a test.

 

Check your work before handing in your paper. Have you answered all the required questions? Have you answered each one fully?

 

After the exam

 

 Take a few minutes after you have finished the test to reflect on your answers. Use this time make additions or changes you are sure of.

 

After the test, review the exam questions and determine how you could do better the nest time. Were yours note inadequate? Did you miss assignments? Did you not read the materials? What materials did the professor use on the test? Book, lectures notes, all? Use this information to help you study for the net test.

 

Cramming

 

If you cram for a test the night before, you will usually only know about 20% of what you need for the test, plus you will be tired and more stressed.

Multiple-choice questions

 

Carefully read each answer separately

 

If you do recognize a answer, mark it immediately.

 

If not, go to the next question immediately and come back letter.

 

Look for an answered that seems right as well as completes the recessions/

 

Look at each number as a true-false questionÓ---eliminate poor answers.

Sometimes Ōall of the aboveÕ or none of the aboveÕ are correct. Remember with these, all statements must be correct, or all statements must be false.

 

Do the following only if you have no idea of the answer:

 

 

 

 

Do not guess wildly. Try to eliminate one or two answers so that you improve your chances of picking the right one.

 

Always put some answer down: donÕt leave any blacks (unless penalized for wrong answers).
