A laboratory class int roducing the student to basic clinical skills for the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The course applies basic principles of anatomy, physiology, pathology and biomechanics to the prevention and care of athletic injuries.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will have basic level of skills in the following areas as related to athletic injuries:
- Anthropometric measurement techniques
- Screening tests for pre participation exams
- Selection and fitting of standard protective equipment
- Injury prevention techniques
- Basic injury assessment
- First aid and crisis procedures
- Taping, wrapping, splinting, padding and bracing
- Use of modalities (heat, cold, sound, light, electricity and soft tissue techniques)
- Therapeutic exercise techniques
- Range of motion testing
- HOPS and SOAP notes
- Crutch and cane fitting and use
- Prevention of blood borne pathogen contamination
This course is the first in a sequence of two classes for students majoring in physical education with an emphasis in sports medicine.
Assignments:
Students will complete laboratory assignments during lab class. Students will complete a clinical proficiency checklist, which will be due on the last scheduled lab class and will include the following areas for the upper and lower extremities, spine, head, thorax and abdomen:
- Anthropometric measurement techniques
- Screening tests for pre participation exams
- Selection and fitting of standard protective equipment
- Injury prevention techniques
- Basic injury assessment
- First aid and crisis procedures
- Taping, wrapping, splinting, padding and bracing
- Basic use of modalities (heat, cold, sound, light, electricity and soft tissue techniques)
- Therapeutic exercise techniques
- Range of motion testing
- HOPS (history, observation, palpation, special tests) and SOAP (subjective, objective, assessment and plan) notes
- Crutch and cane fitting and use
- Prevention of blood borne pathogen contamination
14. Written synopsis of 10 hours of observation (not to exceed two pages) in the Skyline College
Sports Medicine Clinic or other approved physical therapy clinic.
