mabelMy name is Mabel Gudiel and I work as a Process Engineer for Procter and Gamble in our Fabric Care Manufacturing Facility in Louisiana. My primary role is to provide engineering support to the packing department by improving equipment reliability, developing sustainable operational systems and providing coaching and development for our technicians.  I graduated from Skyline College in 2000 with an Associate Degree in Math and Science, transferred to UC Berkeley the same year from where I obtained a Mechanical Engineering degree in 2003.

I immigrated to California at age 17. Already having completed my high school in Guatemala, I intended to enroll at a local university as soon as I turned 18. Navigating the university system seemed too complicated and paying registration was not affordable for me. In my situation, not speaking English and without any financial support, I needed an affordable educational institution that could provide me with a strong foundation that could later assist me in transferring to a four year college.

Skyline College offered me exactly what I was looking for: affordable classes, financial aid and a flexible schedule that allowed me to work full time. I know it sounds like an advertisement for Skyline, but from the bottom of my heart, I know it is the place that gave me the support and encouragement to achieve my goals, it was the platform that pushed me forward. It was at Skyline, during a PUENTE counseling session, that I materialized the dream of pursuing engineering at Berkeley; it was EOPS that helped me pay for my books; it was PUENTE counselors that nominated me for the Bill Gates scholarship that paid in full my years at Berkeley.

The Career Center and career counselors informed me about INROADS, the program that sponsored my internships with Shell Oil. This gave me a tremendous opportunity to gain the necessary work experience and on the job training to enhance my resume and future employment outlook.

It is at Skyline College where I found the mentors and friends with whom, after all these years, I still keep in touch.

If you are attending or planning to attend Skyline College, you are making the right choice. My advice, reach out!!! There are so many programs and amazing people who really care about your future and who are there to help you reach for your dreams.

My name is Eder Castro.  I was one of many high school graduates that did not know where to go after school, I started to attend CSM, but did not know exactly what I wanted to accomplish until I met the staff from Skyline College Career Center.  They helped me out and put me on the right path to transfer to a four year college. Virginia Padron, my counselor, was a great influence to me in making my career decision.  She helped me out with career counseling, tutoring and career assessments that showed me more about my self and my real interests in different academic areas.  I come from a middle class family and don’t have a lot of money to pay for tuition and books but I learned that there is always help available at Skyline College. My counselor gave me information about the EOPS program that aided my pocket and gave me money to purchase my books.  The Career Center at Skyline College is very helpful and puts you on the right track to achieve your dreams.  Three years ago, I was confused and struggling at a Community College, but now I am ready to start my adventure at a State University.  I am an advertising student and planning to finish my studies at San Francisco State.  I always knew I had the potential and the commitment to accomplish something, yet I needed someone to show me the path and I found help with my counselor and the services available to me at the Career Center.   I have been accepted at San Francisco State University and will be transferring this coming fall of 2006. Don’t hesitate to start making your dreams a reality.  Visit the Career Center, speak to the career counselors, and make your dreams come true for you!

My name is Julia Gonzalez.  I graduated from the Esthetic Program at Skyline College and after working in a spa for a short while I decided to leave my job and go back to school and continue my education.  Without a job and after being out of work for two months I decided to look for a job that would accommodate my educational goals.  During the 1st week of November 2005, I found out that Skyline College was holding a Job Fair and after much hesitation I decided to attend.  I really didn’t have any hope that I would find anything exciting that would meet my personal needs.  I was wrong, on November 16th; I attended the Job Fair and found it to be an exciting opportunity where employers form different companies came to look for potential employeesChild Care Careers had the perfect opportunity for me.  I got an interview on the spot and was asked to come for a follow up interview the next day.  I am now fully employed thanks to the Skyline College Career Center Job Fair.
