Phyllis Porcar praised the Security Department staff for their outstanding presentation held on July 24th. Rachel Hefler discussed the seminar, which provided information on the legislation of campus security reporting, and specifically, how Skyline is complying with the law. Information pertaining to the Jeanne Clery Act, The Kristin Smart Safety Act, Megan’s Law, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) was given, and a video on the Jeanne Clery Act was shown.
Rachel reported that the Security Dept. will conduct one seminar every semester, including summer session, and in future, will open the program up to parents and students. Per the Student Right-To-Know and Campus Security Act of 1990, they will show how to access information on Skyline’s campus crime statistics. They will also be able to find statistics on eleven other colleges in the Bay Area, enabling students to compare Skyline’s record to others in the local college community. These statistics are updated annually; however, due to reporting procedures from the Dept. of Education, the latest statistics are for the year 2000. Information for 2001, including reports from Skyline, San Bruno Police Dept., and the Dept. of Education, should be available in October 2002. Security would like students to have this information early in the semester, so the next meeting will be held around the middle of September. The meeting will be videotaped, and a copy of the tape will be available to check out at the Media Center. Information packets from the July meeting are available from Rachel in the Security Office, Room 2319. Security is working on writing up a report to be distributed via email.
Rachel commented that in general, students need to be more cautious—they are too complacent about their personal safety. The school plans to create new signs highlighting safety precautions to replace the old “Walk in Pairs” signs. She suggested that staff and students check out the large bulletin board in the Cafeteria to see the most recent reports of incidents on campus, as well as possible preventive measures to ensure one’s own safety.
Student Fees Increase, Revisited
Rachelle Minong reported that Associate Chancellor Jim Albanese will be leaving soon, and it is not known if his replacement will continue to support the fees increase proposal. While Rachelle said it is vital to find ways to increase funds, Kathy Z-Taylor reminded the group that Skyline students, staff, and faculty were opposed to raising fees, particularly parking fees.
Theresa Tentes corrected last month’s report of a deficit in the Classified Council funds. Due to the fact that less money was spent on the year-end lunch than anticipated, we have $28.00 left. The first fund- raising activity will probably be held in November to raise money for the Classified Staff Fund as well as for student scholarships.
Theresa Tentes asked if enough classified staff had volunteered to be on the Shared Governance Committee. Some members of the group expressed an interest in serving on committees, and Anyta Archer requested information on the various campus committees and a list of classified staff that serve on them. Phyllis Porcar will compile a list of names and distribute it at the next meeting.
The Opening Day Program will be held August 14, 2002 at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center. Registration and breakfast are at 8:00 am, followed by the Chancellor’s welcome speech. Phyllis Porcar will introduce the Classified Council officers during the program. A barbecue lunch will follow the keynote address. Skyline’s opening day activities will begin at 1:30, and conclude with a reception at 3:30.
