Treasurers Report and Fundraising Committee Report
Theresa Tentes reported we now have a balance in our account of $595.71. The recent Bake Sale was a great success and raised $561.10. Theresa said it was nice to see all of us working together as a group. There was discussion about doing the Bake Sale again sometime later in the year and possibly setting up tables in three different locations on campus: in front of Building 2 and 5 and inside of Building 8. Maybe even consider a delivery service. Could the nurse deliver to B & G in the DSPS/Health Centers transporter? The Fundraising Committee is meeting weekly. The next fundraiser will be a Carnitas Luncheon on 10/23. Tickets will be on sale in advance and on the day of the luncheon. They are still finalizing details. They will be looking for volunteers to work in shifts starting at 10AM until 2PM. In the Spring we will host an off campus Spaghetti Dinner. Tickets will be sold in advance here on campus and throughout the community. We will definitely be raffling off Holiday Baskets again this year. The committee is looking into the idea of having each individual department/division put together a basket. The committee is also look into contacting several restaurant/organizations about fundraiser events, i.e. Chevys Round Table Pizza, Krispy Kreme and In-n-Out Burgers.
Halloween Potluck Luncheon and Raffle Maria Mendez is organizing this event for Thursday, October 31, 11:30AM 1:30PM. The room will be decorated to make it a real party. We will be raffling off a Christmas ornament and a White Elephant gift. Tickets will go on sale in advance. Will consider taking a digital picture and putting it out on flyers and e-mail. Maria will distribute a flyer/invitation towards the middle of the month.
Campus Beautification Committee There have been no recent meetings so there is no report at this time. It was mentioned that we do have SC in red and gold flowers at the front entrance to the campus.
District Shared Governance Felix Perez attended the meeting of the committee last month. At that time they were trying to put together a small sub-committee with a representative from each campus to deal with the revision of the hiring guidelines for certificated, classified and administration.
Health & Safety Donna Elliott reported that Barbara Wylie will be the chair of this committee for the year. There were lots of issues brought up at the last meeting but there is no report at this time. The Crime Reporting meeting that was being held today by the Security office is the same information that was presented in the past.
Planning & Budget The meeting scheduled in September was canceled. There should be a meeting scheduled in the near future.
FASDAC/Museum of Tolerance Barbara Daley reported that Linda Kisich and Donna Elliott will be part of the group going to visit the museum on 11/4 & 5. Kathy Fitzpatrick and Pablo Gonzalez will be part of the group going on 4/7 & 8/03. Also in April, hopefully there will be a core group go down to be trained to come back to the campus and train further staff. This is seen as a cost-saving measure. There has been a long list of attendees from the last couple of years compiled.
Strategic Alternatives for Institutional Funding This is committee was formed by Fran White to get input from the campus on how to do more for less. It consists of 12 faculty members, 5 administrators ,4 classified staff (Cathy Welch is the 5th classified member representing the union) and 2 students. There is a $2.1 million total deficit in the district for the year 2002-03 Skylines portion of this is 35% or approximately $5000,00 - $750,000. Ninety-two percent of our budget is salary money. The committee cannot touch discretionary funds and there will be no layoffs of permanent faculty /staff. There will be two more meetings of this committee and then Fran will make the final decision and present it to the Chancellor in January. Whatever cuts are made will be considered permanent.
Ideas for cost saving measures were discussed:
Everyone, including administrators, take one day off without pay
Charge a fee for semester class schedules
Not filling positions when they are vacated
Combining programs within the 3 campuses; having one district wide coordinator/supervisor for a program i.e. Financial Aid
Across-the-board materials fee and/or a separate technology fee
Demanding payment up-front when students register saving the cost of sending out bills/past due notices
Strategic Planning This committee will meet next Wednesday.
Heart Walk Cathy Welch reported that 3 classified staff participated in the 3 mile walk at Coyote Park. It was a wonderful day that included breakfast and lunch. It would have been nice if the college could have provided t-shirts for members that participated.
Upcoming Events/Dates Ileana Gadea announced that Skyline is hosting a breakfast for high school counselors on Friday, October 25. And Felix reminded everyone that at the next Classified Council meeting on November 7, 2:00PM in room 5132A, Richard Holober, President of the Board of Trustees, is scheduled to talk about the conflict with the State Community College Chancellors Office over the hiring of our current Chancellor.
Respectfully submitted by Linda Herda, Secretary
