Next Meeting-January 8, 2004
Present: Barbara Daley, David Lange, Felix Perez, Phyllis Porcar, Theresa Tentes, Kathy Zbikowski-Taylor
Minutes from the
October 2nd meeting were approved.
Officer's Search Committee
Committee members Barbara Daley and Felix Perez have not met yet, but are brainstorming.
Treasurer's Report
The Classified Staff Bake Sale took in $295.01, which was
significantly less than last year's sale. The fact that we were only open for
about 3 hours instead of all day, certainly contributed to us taking in less
money. The group discussed ideas
for improving sales, e.g. having more homemade goods; holding the sale on a
Monday, rather than mid-week (Tues/Thurs classes are too long to generate as
much traffic as on M/W/F); trying not to schedule the sale when other events
are going on. There was some
competition the day of the sale, due to a free coffee and doughnut giveaway at
SFSU's recruitment booth.
Theresa Tentes reported that the total balance in the Classified Staff Fund, as of October 8, 2003, is $4,174.93. No decision has been made yet regarding the scholarships to be awarded, nor on the cost of our upcoming retreat.
Committee Reports
Phyllis Porcar reported that the District Shared Governance Committee has had two meetings. Changes to membership in the committee were announced, and the District presented a plan to create housing for faculty and staff. An apartment complex would be built on district property, and units available to rent at below market cost for those who qualify. The District may also be able to provide loan assistance for new-home buyers.
Skyline students are working on a policy for District Shared Governance. The student trustee said that while things are good at SMCCCD compared to other districts, they want to preserve student's rights for future generations. Sixty two student body presidents composed and sent a letter to Governor Elect Arnold Schwarzenegger, welcoming him to the Governorship and requesting a meeting with him and a group of student leaders. The letter spoke against budget cuts, and pointed out that fee increases place an unfair tax burden on community college students.
Kathy Z-T reported on the Institutional Planning Committee. Kathy, Anyta Archer, and Tiffany Reardon are the three classified representatives. The IPC reviewed the different college committees during its first meeting.
Barbara Daley reported on the Planning and Budget Committee's first meeting. Barbara, Feliz Perez, and Salah Webb are the classified representatives. The committee is the primary budget recommendation group for Skyline, and is responsible for reviewing the revenues and expenditures of the college.
Barbara Daley discussed Horizon Line, the play which the Museum of Tolerance Alumni sponsored for 4 performances at Skyline Nov. 5-6. The play deals with the subject of intolerance and hate, and illustrates how disenfranchised youth are at risk to become involved with groups that instigate hate crimes.
Felix Perez noted that the Student Access and Success Committee is very concerned that cutbacks in the budget, combined with higher tuition will seriously affect student access at Skyline.
Other News
David Lange and Linda Allen are participating in the President's Leadership Seminar. David's response to the classes was very positive. Kathy Z-T (a former participant) commented that the seminars provide an interesting perspective on the history of community colleges and their role in politics and the state budget.
Linda Herda is still researching various places for a possible Skyline's Classified Retreat. The committee discussed ideas for a retreat topic, including: confronting hate speech and communication. More information will be available soon.
Respectfully submitted by Barbara Daley, Historian.
