Classified Council Meeting

Thursday, October 4, 2007

2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, Room 6203

 

Present: Roxanne Brewer, Golda Gacutan, Stanlee Garriott, Linda Herda, Nancy Lam, Barbara Lamson, Adolfo Leiva, Felix Perez, Theresa Tentes, Pat Tyler, and Chris Weidman

 

Minutes from September 6^th meeting were reviewed and approved as written.

 

Guest Speaker

·       Mike Celeste – Presentation was postponed because there were so few people at the meeting at 2:00 pm.

o      There was a CD made of the presentation, “School Shooter”

§       Anyone interested in viewing the presentation should call Linda Herda

 

Bake Sale

·       Thank you to everyone who participated! The Classified Staff did an excellent job on the Bake Sale. This year’s proceeds were $402.72, an increase over the $330 earned last year.

 

Potential Workshops for the Classified Council

·       Adolfo introduced a list of workshops offered by the Claremont EAP – EAP Brown Bags

o      These workshops and speakers are free of charge

o      The workshops are already District approved

o      Here is a list of the topics and a possible workshop from most of the categories

§       Workplace

·       Managing Multiple Priorities

§       Time Management

·       Juggling Act: Overview of Work/Life Balance

§       Communication Skills

§       Health and Wellness

·       Attitude is Everything: Creating a Positive Attitude

§       Career Management

·       Confidence: Being Your Best at Work and Beyond

o      The Classified Council discussed these possible subjects and thought it would be good to start with Juggling Act or Managing Multiple Priorities in November or December of this year.

·       Earlier discussions focused on the possibility of having a workshop on “How to Create an Effective Flyer” – That is still a potential workshop for November

·       Flyers were distributed for “A Walking Tour of the Skyline Campus” with Jan Fosberg, P.E. Instructor, scheduled for October 10^th from 2:00 – 3:00 pm.

 

Treasurer’s Report

·       Current balance $3,824.55

·       Theresa has gotten a quote for the new retirees plaque

o      $217.00 – for the plaque and all engraving for now and in the future

o      The first plaque has been on a wall just inside the Library

§       Are there any suggestions on where the plaques should be placed?

§       It was discussed that it would be nice to have a dedication ceremony when we hang the old and new plaques

 

 

 

Committee Volunteer List

• Health and Safety Committee needed 2 Classified Council representatives
• Stanlee Garriott and Pat Carter volunteered

 

Committee Reports

• College Budget Committee
• There was an anticipated budget deficit of $2.5M before the District Office decided to shift FTES from the summer 2007 semester into the FTES calculations for the 06/07 fiscal year. With this shift, the new anticipated deficit is $1.2M. The CBC will not take any actions at this time to make cuts. The committee will keep watch on the budget to see if there will be enough savings caused by vacant positions to offset the deficit. This discussion will be revisited later in the fiscal year.
• Technical Advisory Committee
• MS Vista is not working well and the District Office has decided not to start distributing this operating system District wide yet. They will wait until some of the bugs have been worked out by Microsoft
• There is a 4 year rotation policy for the District computer hardware
• The District Office is looking for the funding that will be needed to replace the computers
• They might do the labs in shifts to spread out the cost over time
• Podcasting is an up and coming technology that the District want to see the College’s use more
• College Council
• District shared governance – District wide
• Can bring items to the Board
• New building will include Cosmetology, Administration, and International Students
• Fresh Look project will be finished by next fall
• It was decided that having the Commencement Ceremony at 5 pm worked out well
• The group also decided that having the Skyline Opening Day on Tuesday worked out well and next year more workshops will be offered that day
• The Classified Council will be asked to vote on whether we agree on the drafts of new Code of Ethics, Policy on Sexual Assault Education and Prevention, and Public Safety Policy
• There will be 5 different Code of Ethics because the various groups could not agree on one common Code of Ethics: Classified, Faculty, Administration, Board, and Students
• There are cameras installed at Canada College in public areas
• Q & A sheet about cameras on Canada Campus was distributed
• In public areas, you have no right to privacy
• The decision was not approved by the Shared Governance
• Cameras will be coming to all the campuses

 

Next meeting will be held Nov. 1^st, 2:00 pm – 3 pm, in room 6203.
