Books:

The PLS Online Catalog is the online catalog to find books in Skyline Library and in all libraries in the Peninsula Library System.

After clicking on the link above to access the catalog, follow the steps below:

  • Type search words (title, author and/or subject) in the first search box & click Submit.
  • The search results will show books and other materials in all libraries in the PLS system.
  • To Limit your results to books at Skyline College Library, scroll down to “Limit to:  Location: pull-down menu below the search boxes, scroll down in the Location: pull-down menu, select Skyline College & then click the Submit button.
  • When searching for books on the subject of African Americans use AND to combine with more specific topics, e.g.
    • African-Americans AND education
    • African-Americans AND California
    • African-Americans AND history
    • African-Americans AND civil rights
    • African-Americans AND television
    • African-Americans AND reparations

Gale PowerSearch databases - on campus or off-campus w/ library card
articles from academic journals, popular magazines and newspapers; excellent set of general periodical databases.
Available from off-campus--as long as you have a library card (library card bar code number is required).
 

  • To narrow searches, combine concepts with AND, e.g.:
    • African-Americans AND California
    • African-Americans AND civil rights
    • African-Americans AND television
    • African-Americans AND reparations

  • PLEASE NOTE: When search results are first displayed, only magazine articles are shown, if available for your search.
    Click on the “Academic Journals” tab to display journal articles "Newstab to display all news articles; click on the "Referencetab to display reference articles.

Reference articles, primary documents, and full-text journal articles covering all aspects of U.S. and modern world history.

  • Enter search word(s) and click the Search button.
  • If your search finds little or no results, use Advanced search mode and select to search in Full-text of documents
  • At the results page, "Reference" articles (articles from reference books) are displayed first; additional articles may be available by clicking on the article type tabs--"Periodicals", "Primary Sources", "Maps & Images" & "Reference Materials" at the top of the page.
  • Click on the title of an article to display the full text of the article.

Malcolm X: A Research Site: Information about the former Nation of Islam activist and articulate spokesman for the concept of racial pride in the early 1960s. Included are a chronology of his life, a bibliography of his writings with some links to online texts, an annotated Webliography with links to other sites, and a study guide which provides a brief introduction to the life and ideas of this man whose birth name was Malcolm Little and Muslim name Malik Shabazz.

Little Rock High 40th Anniversary: This site is devoted to the history of a landmark event in the history of school integration in the American South. In 1957, nine African-American high school students were the first to enroll in the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Fearing an explosion of violence, President Eisenhower ordered that troops of the National Guard be brought in to protect the students. The site contains photos, videos (QuickTime), and newspaper articles of the time, as well as an update on the nine students and coverage of the dedication of the Central High Visitor Center on the 40th anniversary of the historic events.
