LESSON 8 - NEWSPAPERS AND NEWSPAPER INDEXES

Lesson 8 Contents:

Learning Objectives

I. The Role of Newspapers in Bibliographic Research

II. Newspaper Indexes: Print and Computerized

III. ProQuest: A Computerized Newspaper Index

IV. NEWSPAPERS ON THE INTERNET

In recent years, thousands of newspapers all over the world have established their own websites and made their newspaper available free on the Internet. In most cases, however, only the current week or two is free. Back issues, if available, must be purchased with a credit card. One can avoid these fees by using newspaper indexes subscribed to by libraries, such as ProQuest.

Current news stories from a variety of newspapers and wire services are also easily available from Internet search engines, which provide links to these stories under a “news” category.
