AUTOMOTIVE
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Skyline
College Automotive Technology programs offer
students a well-equipped, modern facility, a large
fleet of late model vehicles, and extensive hands-on
training. Domestic and import car manufacturers provide
substantial support of the programs offered by Skyline.
A generic automotive technology training program
as well as a Japanese program, sponsored by Toyota
Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., are available for entry-level
students. In addition, the College offers numerous
classes to update knowledge and training for practicing
service technicians.

Skyline
College is nationally certified by the National
Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF),
an affiliate of the National Institute for Automotive
Service Excellence (ASE). This organization certifies
automobile technician training programs offered
by high schools, postsecondary trade schools,
technical institutes, and community colleges.
NATEF certification signifies that the program
meets uniform national standards for instructional
facilities, equipment, staff credentials, and
curriculum.

Professional
General Automotive Technology / Mornings: This
program is generic in nature and covers domestic as well
as European and Japanese vehicles. Emphasis is on all areas
of the automobile except body and fender. Students experience
extensive hands-on training totaling over 2100 hours. It
takes 3 years to complete all facets of this program. Entrance into this
program requires a special application and successful completion

Toyota Technical
Education Network Program (T-TEN) / Afternoons: This program primarily
specializes in technology of the Japanese automobile with some
exposure to domestic
products. It does not cover body and fender. Students experience
extensive hands-on training totaling over 1440 hours. It takes
2 years to complete this program. Entrance into this program
requires
a special application and successful completion of prerequisites.
This program umbrellas a major automotive manufacturer's training
program: The Toyota Technical Education Network Program (T-TEN). Some
students may be provided internships
at participating
Toyota and Lexus Dealers as part of their training. Read

Weekend/Evening: Weekend and evening courses are designed for all levels and abilities. General automotive courses for the do-it-yourselfers, entry level courses for prospective automotive technicians, and in-service courses for the working technician are available. Most weekend courses are designed for the working technicians who want to specialize in the areas of Smog Check testing, diagnosis and repair. Other courses are related to diagnosing a variety of electrical and driveability problems. ASE Test preparation courses are also offered twice a year. Courses are offered in convenient two and four day sessions, and four week or eight week sessions. An Associate of Science Degree is available for students enrolled in these courses. No special application or tools are required for these courses. Additional materials and lab fees may be applied to certain courses. Consumer Classes / Saturdays:
Courses are offered on Saturday with the consumer in mind. The student
will learn to perform routine maintenance on his or her vehicle. No special
application
or tools are required for these courses.
Certificates: Students
enrolled in Morning or Afternoon classes are awarded a Skyline College
Certificate upon successful completion of the program. Students enrolled
in Evening classes
are awarded an Automotive Department Certificate upon successful completion

Degrees: Students
enrolled in the Automotive Technology program have the option to obtain
an Associate in Science Degree in Automotive by completing General
Education courses as well as the automotive courses. Read

Required
Tools:
Students enrolled in the Morning and Afternoon classes will be
required to furnish
his/her own hand tools. Students in the program are given a list
of required
tools, which can be obtained from one of several sources with
special student pricing programs through the College. First-semester
student
tools cost approximately $500 to $950, depending upon the brand
of tools and the supplier, with an additional tool cost of $600
to $900 spread
over the remaining semesters. Hand
tools and specialty tools are furnished through the Central Tool
Room for the Evening and Saturday Programs.
