Pointer and Gonzalez Named All Americans


Marcus Pointer and Greg Gonzales became the 13th and 14th All Americans for Skyline since coach Nomicos has taken the program over in 2000. 



Marcus Pointer finished the year at 10 wins 3 loses, and 118 strikeouts in 104 innings.  He was also named pitcher of the year in the Coast Conference.  Marcus finished his career with a record of 20 wins and 8 loses.  Putting him second on the all time wins record for Skyline. 



Greg Gonzalez finished the year with an 8 and 7 record, batting avenge against .192, 152 strikeouts in 114 innings, leading the state in strikeouts for a second time.  Greg is a second time All American (2007) were he was 13 and 5 with 160 strikeouts in 115 innings.  Greg is the all time wins leader at Skyline with 21 career wins, and the all time strikeout leaders with 312
.






SKYLINE EXTENDS PLAYOFF SERIES TO FINAL INNINGS
MAY 10, 2009

The Trojans put themselves in a position to win their way into the second round of this years California Community College State Baseball playoffs, taking #7 seed Cosumnes River College of Sacramento to a third and decisive game in their first round playoff series. Skyline lost the series opener 7-3, but held off elimination in game two with a 6-2 victory. In game three the Trojans held CRC to just three hits, but lost the game in the bottom of the ninth inning 3-2. Tony Loeffler lead Skyline offensively in the series, hitting .400 and driving in 4 runs in the three games. Skyline's pitching staff limited CRC to just 16 hits and struck out 20 in the three games.

In the series finale the Trojans held CRC to just three hits as starting pitcher Ben Ruder (0-1, 2.13) tossed a no hitter through five innings in his first start of the season. Skyline took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Taylor Heon doubled to put runners on second and third with one out and Nico Vargas picked up an RBI on a ground out to shortstop.

CRC took the lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Skyline pushed a cross a run in the eighth to the game 2-2. In the bottom of the ninth CRC put two runners on after a walk and and error, and scored the game winner on an RBI single.

Skyline finishes the season 26-17, and 25-15 in the Coast Conference Pacific Division.

Marcus Pointer ( 9-3, 3.71) pitched seven strong innings for the win and Skyline won the second game of the series 7-2. Lucas Hagberg and Tony Loeffler each drove in a pair of runs and David Alonzo lead off the third inning with a solo home run.

Skyline opened the series with 7-3 loss to the host team. Greg Gonzalez (8-7, 3-22) pitched well into the fourth inning with Skyline leading 1-0, but CRC opened up a big lead with six runs in the bottom of the fourth to chase Gonzalez for his shortest outing of the year. Tony Loeffler hit a two run home run in the seventh to cut the score to 6-3, but the Trojans would have to play game two as an elimination game after the 7-3 loss.


#10 TROJANS GET SET FOR PLAYOFF SERIES

PLAYOFF SEEDING

For the third year in a row the Skyline will be participating in the Northern California Community College Baseball Playoffs. The Trojans (25-15) earned the #10 seed, their highest since 2004 when they were seeded #4. Skyline will travel to # 7 Cosumnes River College (26-14) of Sacramento on Friday May 8th for the first game of the three game weekend series.

Skyline heads into the playoffs winners of eight of their last ten games, a run that secured a second place finish in the Coast Conference Pacific Division. Skyline is one of seven Coast Conference teams to make into this years playoffs.


8TH STRAIGHT WIN GIVES TROJANS SHOT AT DIVISION TITILE

Greg Gonzalez (8-6, 2.85) pitched a one hitter, striking out 12 Monterey Peninsula batters, helping to move Skyline just a game back of Pacific Division leaders Ohlone College of Fremont, giving the Trojans a chance to play for a share of the title on Thursday at Ohlone.

MPC loaded the bases in the first inning with a leadoff double and two walks, and scored a pair of runs on a fielder choice ground out and an error, those would be the last base runners of the day for Monterey. Gonzalez set down the next 24 batters that came to the plate, striking out 12 and in the process, raising his state leading total to 147.

Taylor Heon hit his fifth home run of the season, drove in three runs and scored a pair, leading Skyline back from the early deficit. David Alonzo also drove in three runs, two with an double in the fifth inning.

Skyline (25-14, 19-6) has two games remaining in the 2009 regular season, Thursday's game at Ohlone College and Friday's non-conference season finale at Cosumnes River College of Sacramento. The Trojans have already clinched a spot in this years playoffs, and will wait until Sunday to hear when and where their first round best-of-three series will happen.



 



TROJANS SMASH COLTS FOR SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN

With just three games remaining in the 2009 regular season the Skyline Trojans took a big step towards earning an automatic birth in this years California Community College Baseball playoffs with a 17-9 win over their closest competition, third place Canada College of Redwood City. The win moves Skyline (32-13, 16-5), two and a half games ahead of Canada with just three to play, and just a game and a half out of the top spot in the Coast Conference Pacific Division.

Canada and Skyline had split their season series heading into Thursdays game, with two close games, a 2-1 win by Canada and a 6-5 win for Skyline. The series finale turned out to be a slugfest, producing 27 runs, 38 hits, including seven home runs.

The Trojans sent their ace, All-American Greg Gonzalez (7-6, 3.07) out to the mound in the first inning and he got the Trojans back into the dugout with a quick first inning that featured two of his nine strikeouts on the day. In a sign of things to come, leadoff hitter Lucas Hagberg homered to start off the inning, and David Gregory had an RBI double to give Skyline a 2-0 lead.

After Gonzales struck out the side in the second, the Trojans scored three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by Cody Larson's two run home run and Sean Rodgers RBI double. In the third Skyline added three more when Hagberg homered again, this time a three run shot to make the scored 8-0.

Gonzales struggled with his control on a windy day but lasted five innings, picking up his seventh win of the season, striking our nine and allowing just two earned runs on three hits.

In the sixth inning Cody Larson hit his second home run of the day, a three run blast and in the seventh he added to an incredible day at the plate, lauched his third home run to straight away center field, a two run shot giving him seven RBI on the day. Not to be outdone, Hagberg hit his third home run of the game in the eight inning, another three run bolt, giving the pair of Trojans sluggers a combined eight hits, 14 RBI, and six home runs.

The Trojans can clinch a trip to this years playoffs with a win this weekend at home against San Jose City College, first pitch is scheduled for 12:00pm.



TROJANS RIDE WIN STREAK WITH EYE ON PLAYOFFS

After Thursday's 22-6 romp over Hartnell College of Salinas and Saturday's 7-4 home win over Gavilan College the Skyline Trojans find themselves in the midst of the a hot streak that has them close to a return trip to the postseason.

With just five games remaining on the schedule the Trojans( 21-13, 14-5) trail division leader Ohlone College of Fremont by 2.5 games, and lead third place Canada College of Redwood City by two full games. The top two teams from the Coast Conference's Pacific Division get automatic seeding into this years California Community College State playoffs.

Cody Larson drove in the first four runs of the game for Skyline with a RBI single in the first inning and a three run home run in the third to lead the Trojans to the 7-4 home victory over Gavilan College of Gilroy. Taylor Heon had a pair of hits and scored three runs.

Sergio Contreras (2-2, 6.19) picked up the win, allowing four runs on five hits in five innings of work. Ben Ruder and Mike Gonzalez finished up the win, tossing four innings of shutout baseball, striking out seven in the final four frames.

Marcus Pointer (6-2, 4.44) struck out eleven and picked up his sixth win of the season, backed by a Trojan offense that scored early and often in a 22-6 win over Hartnell College of Salinas.

Lucas Hagberg collected three hits and three RBI in seven at bats from the leadoff spot. Seven Trojans had multi-hit games including Taylor Heon (2-5, dbl, 2run, 2rbi), Cody Larson (2-5, triple, 3 rbi, 2 runs), Nico Vargas (2-4, rbi, run), David Gregory (2-6, dbl, rbi, 2 runs), Nick Misa (2-4, 4 runs) and Tony Loeffler (3-3, rbi). Mike McCarron hit his team leading 8th home run of the season, driving in a pair and scoring three runs in the game.



SKYLINE BATS BACK ON TRACK AFTER BREAK

The Trojans pounded out 14 hits and scored 12 runs against Mission College of Santa Clara on Tuesday. The 12-3 win keeps Skyline (19-13, 12-5) a half game ahead of Canada College for second place in the Coast Conference Pacific Division.

It was a close 3-3 game until the bottom of the seventh inning when Skyline scored five times to break the game open. Lucas Hagberg hit his fifth home run of the season and Nico Vargas drove in two with a single later in the inning. David Gregory had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs.

Greg Gonzalez (6-6, 3.10) pitched a complete game three hitter, striking out a season high 15 batters. Gonzalez leads the state with 117 strikeouts in 95.5 innings pitched.




TROJANS SPLIT A PAIR WITH SACRAMENTO CITY

Nico Vargas drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth innig to give Skyline a 7-6 win over Sacramento City College in the finale of the two game series. Greg Gonzalez (5-6, 3.12) pitched six innings in relief of starter Marcus Pointer to grab the win.

Vargas had two hits and three RBI in the game to lead Skyline. Cody Larson collected three hits, Taylor Heon and Sean Rodgers each scored a pair of runs.

The Trojans fell 6-0 at Sacramento City the day before, Sergio Contreras (1-2, 6.33) took the loss despite only allowing one run on six hits over four innings of work.

TROJANS RIDE THREE GAME WIN STREAK INTO SECOND PLACE

In the middle of the difficult conference schedule the Skyline Trojans (16-12, 10-5) are finally hitting their stride. After winning three games this past week the Trojans have vaulted Canada College and moved into second place in the Pacific Division of the Coast Conference. Skyline started the streak with a 12-2 win over San Francisco City College, then blanked Golden Gate division leader West Valley College 5-0, and yesterday, the Trojans traveled to Gavilan College of Gilroy and cruised to a 14-3 win.

The Trojans pounded out 19 hits and scored 14 runs in the first three innings and four Skyline pitchers combined to strike out 11 in the win at Gavilan College. Ryan Quirk (2-0, 1.72) picked up the win, just two hits and no runs over four innings.

Skyline broke the game open with an eight run second inning. Dennis O'Connor hit a three run home run and Nico Vargas doubled in a pair in the inning.

All-American pitcher Greg Gonzalez (4-6, 3.17) had his best game of the season, pitching seven innings of one hit ball, striking out ten West Valley batters. Skyline broke a scoreless game open in the sixth with four runs. David Gregory drove in two with a bases loaded double and Tony Loeffler added a 2 RBI single in the inning.

 

 



TROJANS CONTINUE WIN STREAK, BEAT CSM 3-2

For the first time this season the Skyline Trojans are doing all the things that earned them a pre-season top ten ranking. With wins this week over division leader and Norcal #2 Ohlone College of Fremont and district rival and Norcal #5 College of San Mateo the Trojans are riding a four game win streak and have moved to within a half- game of first place in the Coast Conference Pacific Division.

Marcus Pointer (3-2, 4.95) pitched his second complete game in the last week, allowing just two hits in the win over CSM (15-6, 5-2). Pointer struck out nine CSM batters and allowed just one earned run in the game. The Trojans out hit CSM 11-2 and pushed across single runs in the second and fifth innings to send the game into the bottom of the ninth tied at 2-2.

In the ninth, Sean Rodgers (3 for 4, triple, 2 runs, rbi) singled to center and stole both second and third base off the CSM catcher, eventually scoring the winning run on a bases loaded walk by Taylor Larson. Taylor Heon (3 for 4) and Cody Larson (2 for 4, 1 run)had multi-hit games.

Skyline (10-9, 4-2) will travel to Hartnell College of Salinas on Saturday , March 14th at 12:00pm.

SKYLINE EVENS CONFERENCE RECORD WITH TWO WINS

After a pair of tough losses to start their Coast Conference Pacific Division schedule the Skyline Trojans rebounded with a pair of impressive home wins over Cabrillo College of Aptos and Gavilan College of Gilroy. Skyline topped Cabrillo 9-5 on Thursday afternoon and shut out Gavilan on Saturday 5-0.

Marcus Pointer (2-2, 6.10) pitched a complete game shutout, striking out a season high 13 batters, as the Trojans moved to 2-2 in the Coast Conference Pacific Division. Lucas Hagberg, Nico Vargas and Mike McCarron each collected two hits in the game.

On Thursday, Skyline picked up their first Coast Conference Pacific Division win 9-5 over Cabrillo College of Aptos. The Trojans pounded out 13 hits and nine runs, lead by Cody Larson (3 for 5, 2 doubles, 2 runs), Lucas Hagberg ( 2 for 3, 2 doubles, 3 rbi) and Nick Misa (2 for 2, double, 3 runs).

The game was tied at 5-5 headed into the bottom of the seventh inning when Skyline broke out for four runs. Taylor Heon doubled home Cody Larson and a Nick Price single drove in Heon, a pair of sacrifice flies completed the scoring in the inning.

Greg Gonzalez (2-4, 2.92) started the game and pitched 6 1/3 innings, striking out nine. Jesse Orozco (3-0, 3.93) came on in the sixth to pick up the win, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out three.



TROJANS TAKE TWO OF THREE IN WEEKEND SERIES

Skyline hosted San Joaquin Delta College of Stockton over the weekend, playing two games on Saturday and a single game Sunday to wrap up the three game series. The Trojans dropped the first game 9-1 but rallied in the second game to win 9-8 and on Sunday played their best game of the pre-season, grabbing a 6-2 victory behind All-American pitcher Greg Gonzales.

In the series finale, Skyline (3-6) got seven strong innings from Greg Gonzalez (1-2, 2.37) and scored six runs on just four hits to earn the 6-2 win. Gonzalez kept the Delta hitters off balance all day, not allowing a hit until the sixth inning, he struck out five and did not allow an earned run. Sergio Contreras ( 0-0, 5.41, 1S) picked up his first save of the season, going the final two innings, striking out one and allowing just one hit.

Lucas Hagberg 's two RBI single in the sixth inning gave Skyline a 5-0 lead and David Gregory scored a pair of runS in the win.

Skyline rebounded and won for the first time since their season opener with a nine run, eleven hit offensive outburst. Taylor Heon lead the Trojans with three hits and four RBI, including his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the seventh inning and a three run triple in the fourth inning.
The Trojans grabbed an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first on Cody Larson's second home run of the season, a three run blast that scored David Alonzo ( 2 hits, 2 runs) and Nico Vargas (2 hits, 2 runs, 1 rbi).
Jesse Orozco (1-0. 5.87) picked up the win, pitching the final three innings in relief of starter Nik Jurado (1-1, 9.00) who lasted five innings and struck out three.

In the first game of the series Skyline struggled to score runs, collecting just four hits and one run in route to a 9-1 loss. Marcus Pointer (0-1, 9.39) took the loss, allowing six runs in just two and a third innings.

 

SKYLINE STARTS WITH PITCHING, DEFENSE, AND WIN

The Skyline Trojans opened the 2009 baseball season at home on Tuesday afternoon hosting Napa Valley College and picked up their first win behind a strong pitching performance and some solid defense.

Nik Jurado (1-0, 1.80) pitched five strong innings, allowing just one earned run, for his first win of the season. Napa had 15 runners reach base in the game, but the Trojans turned four double plays to erase several scoring opportunities.

Lucas Hagberg had three hits, including a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first inning, and scored two runs from the leadoff spot. Taylor Heon had the games only RBI, driving in Hagberg with a sac fly in the first.

Marcus Pointer ( 0-0, 1S) picked up the save, striking out the side in the ninth inning.

Skyline (1-0) will host Sierra College of Rocklin on Thurs., Jan. 29th at 2:00pm.

TROJANS OPEN PRE-SEASON WITH #8 RANKING

The California Community College Baseball Coaches Association released their 2009 pre-season poll on Thursday and the Skyline Trojans, coming off a 28 win season and a second consecutive appearance in the California Community College State Playoffs, opened as the 8th ranked team in Northern California.

This years Trojan roster will highlight a dominant pitching staff, lead by 2007 All-American and 2009 Pre-Seaon All-American RHP Greg Gonzalez (Capuchino HS), returning All-Conference RHP Marcus Pointer (Serra HS), who won 10 games in 2008, and 6'4" Bellermine HS grad and Fresno State transfer RHP Ben Ruder. The offense will be lead by left fielder Mike McCarron, a 6'4" transfer from St. John's University in New York, 6'4" freshman first baseman Nico Vargas ( Watsonville HS) and returning 2008 All-Conference and 2009 Pre-Season All-America Taylor Heon (Serra HS).

Coach Dino Nomicos enters his 10th year as head coach of the Trojans.
