TROJANS DROP SEASON FINALE

Skyline hosted the #1 ranked team in Northern California in its final game of the season.  San Francisco defeated the Trojans 104-82.  Skyline trailed 49-47 with just over 17 minutes to play.  From there San Francisco began to pull away.  The Trojans made a few runs during the second half, but didn’t have enough to close the gap down the stretch.

The loss ended the season for Skyline.  The Trojans finished the year 16-14, one game out of the playoffs.

TROJANS COMPLETE SEASON SWEEP OF CANADA

Skyline recorded its 16th win of the season with a 69-48 win at Canada.  The Trojans held Canada to just 14 field goals for the game, while placing four players in double-figures.  The Trojans were led by Bryan Ngo who finished with a game-high 21 points.

SKYLINE LOSES HEARTBREAKER TO OHLONE 72-71


The Trojans took the road to face the 18th ranked team in California on Wednesday.  Skyline was clinging to a three point lead with 12 seconds remaining when Ohlone connected on a 3-pointer to tie the game.  The Trojans lost the ball in transition on the next possession and fouled Ohlone going in for a layup.  One free throw was all it took and the Trojans came up just short of knocking off two top 20 teams back-to-back. 

Skyline travels to Canada College on Friday for a 7pm tip. 



SKYLINE KNOCKS OFF # 13 CHABOT


The Trojans upset the 13th ranked team in California on Saturday 77-74.  The Trojans led most of the game, but had to overcome a one-point deficit in the last two minutes to seal the victory.  Mario Flaherty knocked down some key free throws down the stretch, concluding a 8-10 night at the line for the 6'8 sophomore.  Darren Morrison led the way for Skyline scoring 26 points and dishing out 4 assists.  The win brought Skyline's season record to 15-12.

Skyline next plays at Ohlone College, the 12th ranked team in California.  Tip is scheduled for 7pm.

SKYLINE FALLS AT FOOTHILL

The Trojans could not overcome a dismal shooting performance on the road and came up short 80-69 at Foothill on Wednesday.  Skyline shot 38% for the night, making just 4 of 18 3-point attempts and missing 10 free throws. 



TROJANS KNOCK OFF HAWKS


Skyline recorded its 14th win of the season on Friday with a 77-69 victory over Las Positas.  The Trojans had 4 players reach double-figures in scoring.  Skyline jumped out to a 20-9 advantage to start the contest, on its way to a 36-29 lead at the half.  The second half saw Las Positas close the gap on a number of occasions, but Skyline hit some key FT's down the stretch to secure the win.

Skyline travels to Foothill on Wednesday for another pivotal Coast-North game.  Skyline won the first meeting against Foothill 93-88 in 2OT.

Former Skyline Basketball Player Marques Benjamin Named National Player of the Week

Marques Benjamin (Skyline ’06) was named National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Player of the Week for Jan. 21-27.  Benjamin, a 6’ senior point guard from San Francisco, CA, helped Mayville State to two wins over Top 25 opponents last week and the top spot in the Dakota Athletic Conference standings.  In a 103-93 win over #23 Jamestown College, Benjamin scored 23 points and recorded 11 assists.  He also went a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line.  One day later in a 84-80 win over #16 Valley City State Univ., he netted 24 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds.  Marques is currently averaging 7.3 assists per game, which is 2nd in the nation. 





TROJANS GO DOWN TO THE WIRE AGAINST #1 TEAM IN CA


Skyline traveled to San Francisco to face the #1 team in the state on Friday.  The Trojans gave SF City College all it could handle in the grand opening of their new gym.  After falling behind by as many as ten points in the first half, the Trojans rallied to get within striking distance going into half-time.  In the second half, Skyline opened up its biggest lead of the game at 54-48 before a furious rally by SF.  The lead changed hands the remainder of the half.  With 1:30 left to play, Skyline had the ball and failed to connect on an open 3-pointer.  SF finished the game hitting some FT’s and won the game by a final score of 78-70.

Skyline returns home on Friday to Las Positas College at 7:30pm.  The Skyline women will host CSM at 5:30pm.

SKYLINE RUNS AWAY FROM CANADA


The Trojans defeated Canada Wednesday night 80-55 behind a well-balanced attack.  Darren Morrison and Mario Flaherty led Skyline with 18 and 17 points respectively.  In total, 12 players scored for the Trojans in the victory.  Skyline led 33-24 at the half before pulling away for good early in the second half.

SKYLINE DROPS HARD-FOUGHT GAME TO OHLONE

The Trojans went toe-to-toe with one of Northern California's top teams for 35 minutes before falling 57-43.  Skyline led 14-9 midway through the first half when Ohlone got the courtesy of a 6-point possession.  The Trojans were called for a foul trying to fight through an illegal screen- the result was a made 3-pointer and then Ohlone received the ball out of bounds.  The ensuing possession, the Renegades knocked down another 3-pointer.  Skyline recovered from the turn in momentum to re-take the lead, but trailed at the half, 20-18.  The second half went back and forth most of the way until the Trojans turned the ball over three straight possessions leading to eight quick points for Ohlone.  In the end, Skyline was forced to foul and Ohlone hit late FT's to extend the lead.  The Trojans shot 30% from the field, and 52% from the line. 

SKYLINE LOSES CLOSE GAME TO #8

The Trojans battled one of the top teams in the state coming up a little short in the second half.  Skyline battled Chabot, the 8th ranked team in NorCal, despite another poor shooting performance for the Trojans.  Matt Fochtman led Skyline with 12 points and 6 rebounds. 

The game came to an exciting conclusion when Skyline center Mario Flaherty shattered Chabot's glass backboard.  Mario followed a missed layup with an emphatic dunk, sending glass everywhere.  The game was officially called at that point, the Trojans trailing 65-59 with eight seconds left to play.

SKYLINE KNOCKS OFF FOOTHILL

The Trojans came out on top of a double-overtime thriller against Foothill on Saturday.  The lead changed hands a number of times throughout the game.  Foothill jumped out in front at the start of the game before Skyline worked its way back into the lead.  At half-time, Foothill lead 37-35.  The second half was close throughout.  The Trojans found themselves trailing by 4 with 10 seconds to go in regulation.  Skyline in bounded the ball under Foothill's basket and Shawn Echols drained a 3-pointer to pull within one, 71-70.  The Trojans fouled immediately and Foothill made 2 of 2 FT's.  Skyline in bounded the ball to Ronney Freeman, who drove the length of the court and knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer sending the game to OT.

The first overtime was back and forth, finally ending at 82-82.  In the second OT, Skyline raced out to a 90-82 advantage.  Foothill came all the way back to pull within two, 90-88.  Skyline knocked down some key FT's down the stretch to secure the win, 93-88.  The win brings Skyline's record to 12-8 on the season and 1-1 in league.  Foothill drops to 10-9 and 0-2 in league.

SKYLINE DROPS LEAGUE OPENER ON ROAD

The Trojans traveled to Las Positas College for its first game in the Coast North.  Although Skyline got off to a good start, leading 7-2 and later 25-19, it could not overcome some poor shooting and defense throughout the first half.  Las Positas scored 17 straight points to finish the first half, taking a 36-25 lead into the locker room.  The second half wasn't much better for the Trojans, who finished the game shooting 35% from the field.  Skyline cut the lead to 5 on a few occasions, but never got any closer.  Las Positas won the game 77-66.


TROJANS ENTER CONFERENCE PLAY ON 3-GAME WINNING STREAK


The Skyline Trojans won its final non-conference game of the season, 86-73 over College of the Redwoods.   Redwoods entered the contest ranked #11 in Northern California.  The win lifts Skyline's record to 11-7.

Skyline opens league play on Wednesday, January 9th at Las Positas College in Livermore at 7pm.

SKYLINE KNOCKS OFF WEST VALLEY

Skyline played one of its best games of the 2007-08 season against West Valley on the road.  The Trojans raced off to a 49-33 lead at the half and escaped with a 83-75 victory.  The win brings Skyline's record to 10-7.

TROJANS EARN ANOTHER WIN ON ROAD

The Trojans traveled to Salinas to face Hartnell College on Friday.  It was a back and forth game for the first 20 minutes.  Skyline took control in the 2nd half and secured a 70-59 road win.  The win puts Skyline at 9-7 going into the holiday break.

TROJANS REBOUND FROM OT LOSS TO WIN CONSOLATION BRACKET


After suffering a 78-77 overtime loss to Napa Valley College, Skyline posted back-to-back wins over Gavilan College and College of Marin to win the consolation bracket of the 2007 Skyline Classic.  Skyline defeated Gavilan by a score of 75-64 and Marin by a score of 71-58.  The Trojans are currently 8-5.  Skyline plays its next game against DeAnza College at 2pm at the West Valley College Tournament on Friday.

 

SKYLINE READY TO RETURN HOME THIS WEEK

The Trojans have played 8 of its first 9 games away from home posting a record of 6-3.  This week, Skyline will play all of it's games in San Bruno.  On Tuesday Skyline faces Monterey Peninsula College at 7pm.  On Friday Skyline opens the Skyline Classic at 8pm against Napa Valley College.  The Skyline Classic will begin at 2pm on Friday and run through Sunday.  The championship game is at 4pm on Sunday.  For the complete bracket, click here.

TROJANS WIN AT GAVILAN

The Trojans won another game on the road Friday, beating Gavilan College 87-71.  The game was tied at 17 before the Trojans scored 7 straight points to take the lead for good.  After missed FTs contributed to the loss against Merritt, Skyline got back to hitting its FTs.  The Trojans were 36-40 from the line. 







SKYLINE DROPS GAME ON ROAD


The Trojans fell to Merritt College on Wednesday 77-68.  Skyline held a 48-40 advantage midway through the 2nd half, but couldn’t hold on to the lead.  The Trojans shot an uncharacteristically poor percentage from the free throw line, hitting just 6 of 14 FT’s for the game.  Skyline next travels to Modesto College for a 5pm tip on November 28th.

 

SKYLINE WINS HOME OPENER OVER SAN JOSE

Skyline improved its record to 5-1 with a hard-fought 57-55 victory over San Jose City College on Saturday.  The Trojans trailed most of the second half before trading leads with San Jose down the stretch.  The game went down to the final seconds and the Trojans knocked down some clutch free throws to secure the win.

Next, Skyline heads to Merritt College on Wednesday, Novemeber 21 for a 4pm tip-off.

 

SKYLINE GETS ANOTHER ROAD WIN

The Trojans improved their season record to 4-1 with an 82-77 over Merced College.  The Trojans trailed the entire game and found themselves down 66-60 with under five minutes to play.  Skyline rallied to score nine straight points and held on to a 69-66 lead with under two minutes to play.  The Trojans never reliquished the lead, knocking down some clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. 

Skyline will host San Jose City College in its home opener this Saturday at 3pm.




SKYLINE WINS CONSOLATION BRACKET

November 12, 2007

The Skyline Trojans took home the San Jose City College Tip-Off Tournament consolation championship with a 68-65 win over Monterrey Peninsula College this past weekend.  The game was tied at 65 with just seconds remaining.  The Trojans held the ball for the last shot and knocked down a three-pointer as time expired.  The win lifted Skyline's record to 3-1 on the season.

To advance to the consolation champsionship, Skyline defeated Pasadena City College 74-59 in a game it led wire to wire.

Skyline returns to action on Thursday, travelling to Merced College for a 6pm tip-off.  The Trojans then return home to face San Jose City College on Saturday, November 17th at 3pm.



SKYLINE OPENS SEASON WITH WIN ON THE ROAD
November 8, 2007

The Skyline Trojans began its season with a win over the College of Marin.  Skyline got off to a great start on its way to a 45-18 advantage at half-time.  The final score was 79-62 in favor of the Trojans.  Skyline had four players reach double-figures in the win.  Skyline will play next at the San Jose City College Tournament on Friday.  The Trojans face Modesto College at 6pm.

 

FRANCIS SIGNS WITH NAIA POWERHOUSE

Jeremy Francis completed his two years at Skyline by accepting a scholarship offer from NAIA II national runner-up Mayville State.  Mayville won the Dakota Athletic Conference for the second straight year and recorded 27 wins before losing in the national championship game.  Francis finished his Skyline career averaging 13ppg and shooting 37% from 3-point range.  Jeremy also earned his Associate’s Degree in May. 

 

Student-Athlete Success Recognized

Former Trojan Paul Phangureh was named 2006 Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association.  Paul completed his two years at Skyline with a 3.6 GPA, earning 74 units.  He was also named to the Dean’s List all four semesters.  For the Trojans, Paul started 45 of 54 career games averaging 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals per game.  Paul transferred to UC-Davis to complete his education.

 

FORMER TROJANS MAKE IMPACT AT NEXT LEVEL

Benjamin leads his team to National Championship game

Former Skyline player, Marques Benjamin, led Mayville State University to the NAIA Div. II National Championship game this season.  A native of San Francisco, Marques graduated from Lincoln High School before joining the Trojans and earning his degree in 2006.  The Comets made its appearance in the nationally televised title game following a stellar season, winning both the regular season conference championship, as well as the conference tournament championship.  Marques started 26 of 36 games at point guard for Mayville, leading them to a 27-9 record.  He shot 49% from the field, led the team in assists, was 3rd on the team in rebounding, and 4th on the team in steals.  Marques also ranked 18th in the nation in assists per game and 8th in the nation in assist:turnover ratio.  Marques was one of three players off last year’s team to earn scholarships to four-year universities.    

Wilhoite Named All-Pac West

Former Trojan Sam Wilhoite had an outstanding season for the University of Hawaii, Hilo.  After transferring from Skyline in 2006, Sam led the Hilo squad in rebounding and was 2nd on the team in FG%.  Sam started every game this season, recording eight double-double’s.  He was also named All-Pac West 2nd Team.  Sam was one of three players off Skyline’s 2005-06 team to earn scholarships to four-year universities.

Popovic Making the Grade

Filip Popovic played this past season for Seattle Pacific University.  SPU won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference for the 2nd straight year.  It finished the season with an 18-10 overall record and qualified for the West regional.  Seattle Pacific was nationally ranked in the top 20 for most of the season.  Not only is SPU a top-ranked basketball program, it’s also a very highly regarded educational institution.  Filip is majoring in Computer Science at SPU.
