Susan Brissenden-Smith

The President’s Council includes representatives from business, industry, government, nonprofits and other organizations whose interest in a connection with Skyline College provides a strong base of knowledge and support for the President of the College. The purpose of the President's Council is to provide community input, feedback and support for the resource development program at Skyline College. |
| Susan Brissenden-Smith Susan is a charter member of the President’s Council, now serving as Chair. Susan is currently with the Seton Health Services Foundation doing fundraising for Seton Medical Center and Seton Coastside programs. Her professional experience includes more than twenty years of service in the public sector, including nine years with Dianne Feinstein (when she was Mayor of SF) and eight with Jackie Speier (both in the Assembly and Senate). She has also worked as the CEO of the Daly City-Colma Chamber of Commerce where one of the highlights was a trade mission to the Philippines. Susan currently is in her second term on the Daly City Library Board of Trustees. Susan enjoys reading, gardening, walking with friends and dogs, and spending time with her husband Rudy and her two daughters Sara and Kaytie. Her daughter Kaytie attends Skyline. Alice Bulos Alice Bulos is a charter member of the President's Council. Her professional experience includes serving as a professor and chairwoman in the Department of Sociology at the Catholic University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. She was President Clinton’s Appointee (1993) to the Federal Commission on Aging. Alice has served on the boards of the San Mateo Head Start, the American Red Cross, and currently is on the Commission on the Status of Women. She is a member of the California Democratic Party, Chairman Emeritus for the Central Committee of the Fil-Am Democratic Caucus, and a delegate to five Democratic National Conventions, and is the President of the California Health Initiative. Alice’s personal interests include the political empowerment of the community, organizing forums to educate the community, and reading. Greg Cochran Greg Cochran is a charter member of the President's Council and the 2007 recipient of the “Skyline Shines Award.” His involvement with the college began several years ago when he was Food and Beverage director at a hotel in South San Francisco where Skyline College held some meetings. Through that connection, he got involved in supporting the college’s athletic programs, and his commitment to the school has grown from there. Greg has always been an entrepreneur and a leader with expertise in networking and bringing together the right people and resources. He began his career starting very successful restaurants and night clubs in the Napa Valley. Relocating to the Peninsula, he shifted into the hotel Food and Beverage director role, and then became the Executive Director for the South San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. Greg currently serves as Chair on the Peninsula Coalition, as president of the Pedro Point Surf Club, as an officer on the Pacifica Parks, Beaches & Recreation Commission, as a director on the Bay Area Water Transit Authority Board, and he works with the Ride-a-Wave Foundation and the Juvenile Diabetes Association. In addition, Greg is the Director of the North San Mateo County Leadership Forum, a course offered at Skyline every fall to connect future community leaders with current leaders. He is a member of the South San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, the Daly City-Colma Chamber of Commerce, the Pacifica Beach Coalition, the Surf Rider Foundation, and the Pacifica State Beach Task Force. You will often find Greg “hitting the waves” as he is an avid surfer. Michon Coleman Michon Coleman is the Deputy Director of Government Affairs for the San Mateo County Association of Realtors, where she works with local, state and federal legislators on land use issues and the protection of private property rights. She is also Chair of the California Association of Realtors Government Affairs Directors Committee. Her previous experience includes working for U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, focusing on the HIV/AIDS pandemic, economic development and the environment. Michon has also worked in the legal and public policy arena. Michon earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley and her Juris Doctorate from Santa Clara University School of Law, where she served as President of the Black Law Students Association. In 2004, Michon joined John Kerry's campaign in Pennsylvania as a member of the Voter Protection Team and provided on-site assistance to voters regarding voting rights and election laws. Currently, she volunteers as a Policy Advisor on a State Assembly campaign. Michon serves as Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for AIDS Project East Bay and as a Board member of the Center for the Early Intervention on Deafness. She also works closely with local agencies dedicated to empowering women through self entrepreneurship. Jim Comstock Jim Comstock is the Director of Business Development and Community Relations at the Seton Medical Center. He directs business development for Seton, Seton Coastside, and West Bay Home Health. Seton is a 300-bed facility in Daly City, with more than 1700 employees. Jim serves on the Daly City-Colma Chamber Board of Directors, the Vincentian Service Corporation Board of Directors, and the Daly City Police Athletic League Board of Directors. He is Vice Chair of the Board of San Mateo County Economic Development Association (SAMCEDA). Mike Crilly Mike Crilly is a charter member of the President's Council. Mike has worked for the Jefferson Union High School District (JUHSD) since 1972. He has served as the Superintendent for the past 12 years. Mike, a long time educator, completed his student teaching at Oceana High School (OHS) and later became an English Teacher, Vice Principal, and Principal at OHS. He also worked at Westmoor High School as the Vice Principal and then became Principal. Mike serves on the Daly City-Colma Chamber of Commerce Board and is a Past President. He is currently active with the Partnership for a Safe and Healthy Pacifica and is a member of the Daly City-Quezon City Sister City Committee. Mike enjoys spending time with his family, skiing, kayaking, and running. Roxanne Elizabeth Cruz Roxanne is a first generation Latin American, born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Roxanne returns with great affection to her alma mater, Skyline College, where she obtained an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts (1997), then transferred to Sacramento State where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (2000). Immediately following college, Roxanne worked as a case manager for several non-profit organizations serving low income Latino families. After four years of working as a social worker, Roxanne switched gears and worked as an Event Coordinator at a well-known restaurant chain in the Peninsula. Within a year, this job fueled Roxanne’s passion to search out an opportunity that entailed public functions to educate and serve the Bay Area. Roxanne has been a Governmental Relations Representative with Pacific, Gas and Electric Company since 2004. Jamie Fong Jamie is the owner of Fong and Associates, a full-service “branding” agency that helps business with their image and vision. His products are located in www.faaprinting.com and www.faabranding.com. His services involve working with businesses on their “identity” and their “promise” to employees, customers, vendors, and community. Jamie has worked over 25 years in the Bay Area. Jamie also serves on Eastbay Craftsmen Club and belongs to Printing Industries of Northern California, Folding Carton Industries, and Specialty Graphics Imaging Association. Jamie has two teen-age daughters—Veanna (15) and Ariana (13)—attending Highland Christian School at San Bruno, and both have already set their eyes on Skyline. During the weekend, he enjoys mostly water sports, as well as spending time with his wife, Siu, a Social Worker at Golden Gate Regional Center. Michael Guingona, Esq. Michael is a charter member of the Skyline President's Council. He is a criminal defense attorney, now in private practice. He joined the San Francisco Public Defenders Office in 1990, where he remained for nine years. Michael was the first Filipino elected to the Daly City Council. After serving for three years, he was elected as mayor in 1996. At that time, he was the youngest mayor in the history of San Mateo County. He has since served two additional terms as mayor. In 2005, Michael was inducted into the Skyline Stars: Transfer Student Hall of Fame, established to honor former Skyline College students whose lives are exemplary for their accomplishments and their contributions to the community. Michael transferred from Skyline College to UCLA, where he got his BA degree in History. Michael obtained his JD degree at USF. Steven House Steven House is the proprietor of Outback Steakhouse in Daly City. Steven moved to California from Texas in 1999, and began his career with Outback shortly after his arrival. He began as a cook and quickly moved up the ranks to management, taking over ownership of the restaurant in 2006. Steven was born in Aurora, Colorado, and grew up in Forth Worth, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, and played rugby while there. He now lives in Millbrae with his wife, Tami and his son Elijah. Steven has teamed with the Daly City Police Department both for their yearly Pal golf tournament, as well as theEvery 15 Minutes event, which illustrates what happens when teens drink and drive. The Daly City Outback also invites local school children to tour the restaurant during "kid tours," where the students see the workings of the business, learn about Australia, and enjoy lunch. Jennifer Huang Jennifer B. Huang is an associate at the San Francisco firm of Sanger & Olson. Her practice includes entitlements, land use, due diligence, redevelopment and transit-oriented development. Formerly, Ms. Huang represented residential and commercial developers in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a proud alumna of public education, having received her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and graduate degrees from UCLA. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys cooking, sports, and time with family and friends. Maritess Lagandaon Maritess E. Lagandaon is the Business Center Manager for the Daly City Business Center, a program of the City of Daly City providing personalized business support services and small office spaces to entrepreneurs starting or growing their business. Her professional experience includes being a consultant for small businesses, owning a small business, writing for a community newspaper, advertising and event planning. Her personal interests include reading, music, art, nature and family activities. Patricia Lindo Since 1976, Patricia has been helping people make their dream of home ownership come true, having worked at several title companies before obtaining her Realtor Designation in 1996. Recent Designations include NCP, ASP and Feng Shui Certifications. Patricia is committed to helping the community. She currently serves as Chair of The San Mateo Association of Realtors Cultural Diversity Committee, and President/ Director of Corporate Affairs of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) of Silicon Valley. As Founding Board Officer of NAHREP S.V., Patricia chaired the Educational Outreach Committee as First Vice President of the Board of Directors from 2003- 2005. Active in both the San Francisco and San Mateo Association of Realtors, Patricia is currently implementing the Founders Template for the First Bay Area Multi Cultural Real Estate Summit which includes 11 Bay Area Trade Associations in four Bay Area Counties. Patricia’s mission is to make their dream of homeownership a reality for all via education and elevating the standard of service real estate professionals apply within the Real Estate Industry. Carolyn Livengood A charter member of the President's Council, Carolyn was the first recipient of the “Skyline Shines Award.” She is a columnist for the San Mateo County Times and also writes for the Brisbane Chamber of Commerce's monthly newsletter, the Luminary. Her contributions to Skyline College began in 1964 when she became the North County chairperson of the first bond campaign to build the college and was precinct chairperson of the second bond issue in 1968. She was a member of thefirst graduating class in 1971. Her professional experience includes: insurance policywriter/auditor/supervisor, marketing/sales, lecturer, tour guide, columnist, and classified advertising sales rep. In 2004, she was inducted into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame. She serves on the Sequoia High School Alumni Association (she received its 2006 Unsung Hero Award) and Jobs for Youth boards. Some of Carolyn’s community involvement also includes: the San Bruno Beautification Task Force, San Mateo County Committee on School District Organization, San Bruno Culture & Arts Commission, Women Seeing Beyond Today, Children’s Fund, San Bruno Chamber of Commerce, San Bruno Library Foundation, Brisbane Chamber of Commerce, San Bruno Honoring Our Veterans, Avenue of Flags Committee, and the Sequoia Veterans Memorial. She was a 25-year member and four-year chair of the San Bruno Citizen's Crime Prevention Committee. In 2006, she retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary after 25 years of service including being a past commander. Her personal interests include volunteering,gardening, golf, sea shell collecting, reading, dancing,and politics. Paige Lloyd Paige Lloyd is currently a Senior Staffing Consultant at Genentech. During her 8-year tenure, she has been responsible for developing and implementing recruiting strategies for internal clients spanning Genentech with the goal of attracting and retaining new college graduates in entry level, intern, and rotation program positions. Paige is the key stakeholder in the highly successful partnerships between Genentech, Counties of San Mateo, Solano, Alameda and targeted community colleges such as Skyline and Ohlone in the development of the Biotech Certificate Program which has been recognized by the US Department of Labor. Paige is passionate about developing and maintaining critical academic and industry partnerships that bridge the gap between industry and academia. Paige enjoys spending time with her husband and five year old daughter, Sydney. She also loves cycling, fundraising and participating in multiple events including the MS 150, AIDS/Lifecycle and Tour de Cure. Dave Mandelkern Dave is a trustee of the San Mateo County Community College Board of Trustees. He was elected to the Board in November 2003. Dave is also a charter member of the President's Council. Previously, he served on the San Mateo County Office of Education Internet Access Task Force and is currently a trustee and vice chair of the California State Parks Association, as well as an active volunteer for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Dave was 2001 Silicon Valley Man of the Year. He previously has been a board member of the Volunteer Center of San Mateo County and was a member of the 1997 San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury. Dave is the President & CEO of QwikHealth, Inc. which makes high quality medical care affordable and convenient. He has more than 20 years of entrepreneurial experience with Silicon Valley startup companies. Denise Miles Denise is the Community Development Officer for Wells Fargo covering the Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Region. Denise partners with non-profit organizations in providing programs including free financial literacy, Homebuyer Education workshops and Access to Capital seminars for small business owners. Denise worked as a Communications Consultant for the company’s Communications and Marketing Department. She has also worked for Mayor Willie Brown in the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, where she served as the Community Liaison for the South of Market, Tenderloin, Treasure Island, and Filipino Community. Prior to working for Mayor Brown, she was an Assignment Editor at KTVU-TV (FOX, Channel 2) where she assisted in assigning stories and scheduling interviews for reporters. Denise, a former Skyline College student, holds a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Journalism from San Jose State University. Jeannene Minnix Jeannene Minnix is the Marketing Coordinator for First National Bank of Northern California. Her professional experience includes marketing, event planning, and community outreach. Jeannene’s past experience includes over 7 years with the Daly City-Colma Chamber of Commerce, the last two years as Chief Executive Officer. Her community involvement includes working with the Sustainable San Mateo County and the South San Francisco Kiwanis Club. She graduated from North San Mateo County Leadership Forum in 1997. Jeannene enjoys jazz, live music, horseback riding, flea markets, and wine tasting. Linda Monte Linda Monte is the Chief Operating Officer for the Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco Medical Center. She facilitates, directs, and coordinates operational activities and programs relative to the day-to-day hospital operations of the Medical Center through the delivery of cost effective and quality services. Linda began her work in healthcare 24 years ago. She received her BSN and RN at Northeastern University, and MNA from the University of California Los Angeles. Linda lives in San Rafael and enjoys skiing, playing golf, riding horses, and hiking. Linda has also been doing yoga for 25 years, and believes that being active is a great counter balance to all of the stress we experience in our daily lives. Cherie Napier Cherie Napier works for Jones Lang LaSalle, a world-wide real-estate firm as the Marketing Director for Serramonte Shopping Center. She is originally from Chicago, Illinois where her family resides. Cherie had internships at two top Public Relations firms in Chicago and experience consulting to non-profits including higher educational institutions on fundraising, marketing and event planning. She has experience in retail sales, retail marketing and management. Cherie is a board member for the Daly City/Colma Chamber of Commerce, Northern California Marketing Directors Association, Pacifica Community Television and Co-Chair of the Daly City/Colma Chamber Scholarship Committee providing scholarships to residents in pursuit of higher education. She loves to travel, experience theater, dance and live musicals. She resides in San Francisco with her fiance¢ Ruben. William Nack William is the Business Manager/Executive Officer of the Building and Construction Trades Council of San Mateo County, AFL-CIO. He has served in this capacity since March 1, 1999, and has primary responsibility for implementation of all actions and positions taken by the Council. The Building Trades Council comprises of 24 local construction unions with a total membership of 16,000 union construction crafts men and women. The Building Trades Council’s primary mission is to monitor and advocate for environmentally and socially responsible projects using the highest quality materials and construction methods. William currently participates as a member on the following boards and commissions: San Mateo Community College District Bond Oversight Committee, San Mateo County Housing Endowment and Regional Trust Board of Directors, San Mateo County Housing Leadership Council Board of Directors, serves as the Vice-President of the San Mateo County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, and is a member of the of the Peninsula Coalition Board of Directors. William is a 40-year resident of San Mateo County. He is married and is the father of two school age children. Mario Puccinelli Mario Puccinelli is the Vice President and General Manager of the San Bruno Garbage Company, Inc., a subsidiary of the Norcal Waste Systems, Inc. He has worked 29 years in the waste industry. Mario is the Past President of the Rotary Club of San Bruno and currently serves as a Director. He is also the Director of the Carlton Corners, formally known as the Girl Scout House and was the Past President and Past Director of the San Bruno Chamber of Commerce. Mario enjoys any outdoor activity, golfing, fishing, reading, and is a youth coach. Elizabeth Quiros Elizabeth Quiros currently is the Vice President of Finance and Real Estate Investor for Grundmann Properties. Elizabeth is an accountant by trade and is the daughter of a prominent politician in El Salvador. She serves as the President of the San Mateo County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SMCHCC), which has grown from 10 to 158 members. The SMCHCC has won, 5 years in a row, the Small Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of the Year from the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (CAHCC) and the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC). Elizabeth is very committed to community service and serves as a member of the CAHCC and USHCC. A. Sepi Richardson Sepi Richardson is a charter member of the Skyline President's Council. She completed her term as Mayor and currently serves as Councilmember of the City of Brisbane. She is President of Richardson Consulting Services, a financial, management, human resource, and Government Relations Company that serves public entities. Sepi serves on the State Boards of California League of Cities and California Lands Acquisition Formation Commission, as well as regional board of Association of the Bay Area Governments. Sepi is on the Executive Board (Board Secretary) of the San Mateo Community Colleges Foundation, is involved in various not-for-profit boards such as Burlingame Rotary. She loves traveling, cooking, entertaining, reading, walking, swimming, movies, opera, ballet, plays, concerts, art and spending quality time with friends. Carol Tanzi Carol is the President/Owner of Carol A. Tanzi, ASID & Associates, known worldwide as the “Goddess of Garbage.” She is an ASID member, Certified Interior Designer of CA, and holds her teacher’s credential in Interior Design. Carol is an award-winning interior designer, a recipient of the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame and is recognized in Who’s Who in the World. Carol has won numerous awards, and is a lecturer and television personality. Her community involvement includes membership in Burlingame Rotary, the North Peninsula Food Pantry and Dining Center of Daly City Committee, Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club, and the Colma Historical Association. Carol’s personal interests are collecting miniatures, reading, traveling, and the “Goddess of Garbage” enjoys recycling. Jim Vreeland Jim currently serves as a Pacifica City Council member and was the former Mayor. Jim’s professional experience includes serving as Congressional Liaison and Program Manager for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He was also was part of the Presidential Management Fellowship from 1988-1990. His community involvement includes Pacifica Planning Commissioner (Chairman 1996); Chairman of San Mateo City/County Association of Governments, Chairman of County Library Joint Powers Authority, Pacifica Land Trust (past Board-member), Pacifica School Volunteer, Board-member, Quarry Reuse Committee, Sharp Park Sewer Treatment Plant Reuse Committee, Pedro Point Surf Club, Tunnel Advisory Committee, Linda Mar Beach Task Force, and the Pacifica Skate Park Committee. Jim holds a Master’s of Public Administration and Natural Resources Management along with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science/Minor in Business. Tedi Vriheas Tedi Vriheas is the External Affairs Director for AT&T. Her professional experience includes interfacing and lobbying with federal, state, and local legislators and other elected officials on behalf of AT&T. She has worked for SBC Regulatory and Constituency Relations as the Area Manager – External Affairs; SBC Operations as the Supervising Area Manager – Procurement; Pacific Bell as the Contracts Manager & Case Manager – Legal/Regulatory and served as an attorney at the Law Offices of Elizabeth McDonald. Her professional affiliations have included memberships with the State Bar of California, American Bar Association, the Federal Communications Bar Association, and the San Francisco Bar Association. Tedi was the United States Women’s National Rowing Team Assistant Coach in 1992-1993 and the United States Women’s Olympic Team Assistant Coach in 1993-1995. Carol Way Carol Way is a charter member of the President's Council. Carol retired from teaching in Dayton, Ohio, and San Leandro, California. She serves on the American Association for University Women (AAUW) and is a member of the San Mateo County Alumnae Panhellenic and is the Chairperson for the 2008 fundraiser. Carol is an active member of the San Mateo County Emergency Medical Care Committee and served as chairperson for 9 years. Carol’s community involvement includes serving as Past President for the Assistance League, San Mateo – Burlingame Auxiliary of the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, and is a Director on the San Mateo County Community Colleges Foundation. Carol’s personal interests include legislation (AAUW), traveling, reading and spending time with her grandchildren. Carol is looking forward to her new granddaughter who will be arriving in September 2007. |
