CALIFORNIA ASSESSMENT INSTITUTE RESOURCES

The California Assessment Initiative is intended for faculty and staff, administrators, research and assessment professionals, and policy makers interested in promoting the practice of assessment in higher education in general, and in the California Community Colleges in particular. It is intended to provide quick access to a wide variety of principles, resources, materials, tools, organizations and points of contacts dealing with assessment in higher education. On this website are resources on conducting course, program, and GE level assessments, as well as rubrics, portfolios, and embedded assessment.

CENTER FOR STUDENT SUCCESS OF THE RESEARCH AND PLANNING GROUP

The Center for Student Success (CSS) was established in July 2000 by members of the Research and Planning (RP) Group for California community colleges. This section of the website includes the latest literature and practical examples to assist the practitioner in developing, implementing and assessing student learning outcomes in the classroom, as well as in the course, the program or major, and in general education. Information and tools span from basic skills coursework to student development services, with particular attention paid to examples of how assessment of learning can help to engage students for improved learning.

STUDENT SERVICES ASSESSMENT POWERPOINT

This Powerpoint presentation is a useful overview of how to generate SLOs and means to assess them.

BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE'S ASSESSING STUDENT LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION

This website was designed as a resource to train and equip faculty to do assessment in their own classrooms and programs.

The website includes:

bullet

information about the history and need for assessment

bullet

evidence of the benefits of assessment

bullet

vocabulary used in assessment

bullet

new research findings on deep learning

bullet

details about external expectations for assessment and links to accreditation standards

bullet

exercises to enable faculty to write Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

bullet

sample assessment tools

bullet

links to assessment resources and activities on other campuses

bullet

guidelines for good assessment practices

bullet

materials that faculty can use and modify for their own courses

bullet

suggestions for implementing assessment training on campus

bullet

techniques for modifying pedagogy to enhance learning

bullet

concepts that highlight the connection between assessment and the learning paradigm

The underlying philosophy of this website is that assessing learning should be a faculty-driven activity. Learning occurs at many levels and in many venues in higher education, this training specifically targets course and program assessment and to a lesser degree addresses student services assessment.
