Everything You Needed To Know About Being In A Title III Class

What is Title III anyway?

Title III is a federally funded grant program that was originally created to provide resources to historically black colleges and universities. Now, the grant is available to any post-secondary institutions whose students body meets certain criteria. The application process, however, is very competitive. in 11998, Skyline College was awarded a grant of 1.75 million dollars to be used over five years. Activity 1 of the grant provides for training teachers on the use of technology and interactive teaching strategies. Activity 2 is designed to link electronically all of the student services on campus so that we will be better able to track students and to meet their needs.

How do I benefit?

If you are in a Title III class you benefit because your instructor has decided to take the time this year to get reenergized about teaching. He or she is willing to experiment with new strategies, both in terms of working with students and in terms of working with technology.

How do I benefit when I am not taking a Title III class?

Even if you are not in a Title III class, you should notice a difference on campus. Part of the grant funds technicians who should improve the day-to-day operations of technology on campus. The grant is also being used to purchase new software for the Learning center so that you will be able to brush-up on your study skills.

How are Title III classes different from other classes?

It may not be any different. Your instructor will definitely have a web page. He or she will definitely use it to some degree, but will decide what is appropriate given the subject matter and the student population. Your instructor will probably use more interactive and group projects than some of the other instructors on campus. And you will probable benefit from a certain enthusiasm that is the natural fall out of your instructor working to improve his or her teaching skills

I don't know my way around the web; how will this affect my grade in this class?

Talk to your teacher right away if you have trouble. There are frequent trappings in the Learning Center to help you out, and you may want to sign up for a class with the business division or through the Library. With respect to your grade, it is probable that at least some of your assignments will require that you use on-line resources.

What do I do if I can't remember my instructor's web page address?

You may just search through any browser under a topic like Skyline College + San Bruno. That will bring you to the Skyline Home page and you should be able to find a faculty address from there.

Where and when can I get on-line on campus?

We have three main computer labs on campus. The Learning Center has both Macs and PCs and has expanded hours this semester. The Library also has several banks of computers available to you as does the PC in Building 2. In general, all of these labs are open from 8:00 in the morning until 10:00.

Are any technological resources available to me besides computers?
