This program offers the unique opportunity to live and study in two of Spain’s most fascinating cities. Granada, standing at the foot of the spectacular mountains of the Sierra Nevada, is a lively and hospitable city which holds a rich multicultural past. Heir to Moorish dynasties, Jewish philosophers, and the home of Spain’s largest gypsy community, Granada is an inspiring place for discovering magnificent architecture, Flamenco music, old-style bazaars and tea rooms. As Spain’s third largest university center, Granada offers an intellectually vibrant atmosphere for students to learn and immerse themselves in the splendor of Andalucian life.

Granada offers students a great climate and location. A lively city with more than 300,000 inhabitants, Granada is perched between the dazzling white peaks of the Sierra Nevada and the glistening blue Mediterranean of the Costa del Sol. With its wide plains, high mountains and sunny coastline, Andalucia retains some of the most beautiful scenery in Spain. Students see some of the most beautiful and intricate buildings of the medieval world in Andalucia. International resorts on the coast contrast with the agricultural life of the inland plains, where students can still find traditional Spanish white-washed villages, flamenco music, bullfights and festivals.

The second part of the program takes place in Madrid, one of the finest capital cities in Europe. Located in the heart of Spain, Madrid simmers in intense cultural and artistic activity. World renowned museums, modern theater, ballet, opera, the traditional bullfights, as well as its lively night life and bustling cafés, bestow Madrid with enormous cultural vitality. The capital of Spain since 1562, Madrid is located on the geographic center of the Iberian Peninsula. Because of its central location and high altitude, the climate of Madrid is characterized by warm dry summers and cool winters. Madrid is a city of great monuments. Among its highlights are the medieval center dating back to the Habsburg Empire and the Prado Museum. But Madrid is not just a cultural destination. It is also a lively metropolis with many pubs, cafes, discotheques and nightclubs open late into the night.

What does the program cost?

California residents pay the regular community college enrollment fee for Semester in Spain courses. Students who do not qualify as residents pay non-resident tuition as they would at their local community college.

The AIFS program fee of $6,985 includes a $450 deposit due with application and pays for  shared accommodations in twin-bedded rooms; two/three meals per day in a Spanish homestay, weekly laundry, medical and fee refund insurance, and a number of subsidized cultural and social activities. This fee excludes airfare (an optional airfare package is available with cost estimated to be between $1,533), class registration fees, textbooks, passport and visa fees, and other personal expenses.

The program fee covers the cost of a sightseeing bus tour to Portugal, with two nights in Faro and three nights in Lisbon in tourist-class hotels in twin or triple rooms on a bed and breakfast basis, with half-day sightseeing tours in Faro and Lisbon.

Is financial aid available?

Many students may be eligible for financial aid (grants/loans) to assist them in paying the cost of their Semester in Spain educational program. Early application for financial aid is essential as processing can take up to twelve weeks. Interested students should contact the Financial Aid Office at College of San Mateo (even if they currently attend another college).

Why live with a Spanish family?

Students live and share daily breakfast, lunch (in Granada)  and dinner with carefully selected Granada and Madrid families for six weeks in each city. The family stay is often a highlight of the student’s experience in Spain, and many remain in contact for years thereafter.

A cultural program is offered at no extra charge, including visits to such attractions as El Escorial, museums, Spanish cinema, flamenco dancing show, concerts, and several excursions.

Who are the faculty?

Rudy RamirezCollege of San Mateo courses will be offered by Rudy Ramirez, who attended College of San Mateo and San Francisco State University where he received a B.A. as well as a Masters in Ethnic Studies.  Rudy was born in Costa Rica, Central America and grew up in the Mission District of San Francisco.  The Mission District is perhaps one of the most multicultural areas in the United States and this fact did not go unnoticed as a young child growing up with Anglos, Asians, Blacks, Polynesians, and Latinos from all over Latin America.

Growing up in a musical family, Rudy learned to play the guitar from his father who was a professional entertainer.  In time Rudy, learned to play several genres such as Latin, classic rock, blues, Latin rock, R&B, etc. and began playing professionally from the age of sixteen.  Today, he continues to play professionally.  Every semester, he puts on a lecture/concert at the CSM Theatre on different genres of music.

A passionate lover of life, Rudy enjoys dancing, hiking, laughing and deep conversations.

Cosumnes River College  and Santa Rosa Junior College faculty will teach other courses and guest lecturers will participate in the Spanish Life and Culture series.
