About Libr 100

This course is about way more than using the library: it's about wrangling information. That is to say, you will learn about wonderful and free tools, resources, and services available to you through the online and physical library that will save you time and make academic life easier. The skills you develop to find, evaluate, interpret, and cite information will be useful to you long after this course is over.

About Me

This is my fourth year providing reference desk help and research skills instruction to the CSM community and my first year teaching Libr 100. My goal is to teach people research skills that they'll use for a lifetime. I'm originally from Los Angeles, where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Anthropology from UCLA. I earned my Master's degree in Library and Information Science at San Jose State University.

Course Textbook

The textbook for the class is The College Student's Research Companion: Finding, Evaluating and Citing the Resources You Need to Succeed by Arlene Quartiello. ISBN: 9781555707293. This is the 5th edition of this book. Past editions are very different and won't work for this class. You can buy this at the CSM bookstore. There are also three copies of the textbook available through College Reserves at the CSM Library. Check whether a copy is currently available here.

Library Card

You will need a free Peninsula Library System (PLS) library card. If you have one already, make sure it's still active by visiting any PLS library with a photo ID to update your contact information and renew your card. If you do not yet have a PLS library card, you can obtain one free from any public library in San Mateo County.
