Keyword Search Keyword searching allows you to think of your own "keywords" to describe your topic. The results can be somewhat "messy" since the computer will look for your search term(s) in any field of the record, but it offers you the advantage of not having to know the correct subject heading. It is often a good strategy to start with a keyword search rather than a subject search when you are looking for books on a specific subject or topic and don't know the official subject heading. Within the menu, these options indicate keywords can be used:
Conduct a TITLE Keyword search STEP1: Connect STEP2: Start with a TITLE keyword search. Think of 1 or 2 keywords that describe your topic. Your keywords should usually be somewhat general. (You can use Boolean terms: AND, OR, NOT " " ) What are Boolean Terms? (Lesson 2)
STEP3: Move the cursor into the box to the right of the menu and enter the keywords that you would like to appear in the title. Click "Go". STEP 4: Write Down The Call number Once you have a specific title displayed, you can write down the call number. A call number is a combination of letters and numbers assigned to a book to indicate its shelving location. It is an "address" that allows you to find that item in the library. Call numbers are found on the spine of the book and on the full display of bibliographic records. This arrangement is intended to be convenient for library users since books on the same subject are placed together on the same shelf.
