Advanced Search Practice

 

Using additional syntax to focus your search, will give you fewer more relevant returns. Use " Search Syntax" (Boolean terms)

 

Use Yahoo! to do an advanced search using Boolean terms:
(Don't use Google.  It offers you an "advanced search" link instead. )

  1. to enter your own "search syntax" words (also known as Boolean Logic)
  2. to use their "advanced search" page which enters the search syntax words for you.

Do this - Search for "Ghiradelli Square" using a Keyword Search

Click on this hyperlink: http://www.yahoo.com/ It will open in a new window.
Tip: Using two browser windows allows you to use this one as reference
and the other as a work window.

  1. Enter:   Ghiradelli Square               Let the search engine use its default operator.
    How many search returns did you receive?
     
     
  2. Enter AND:   Ghiradelli +Square   Compare this answer to the one above.
    How many search returns did you receive?
     

  3. Enter:  "Ghiradelli Square"              .
    How many search returns did you receive?
     
     
  4. Enter NOT:  Ghiradelli -Square  
    How many search returns did you receive?
     
       
  5. Enter:   Ghiradelli OR Square  
    How many search returns did you receive?
