Get flex credit attending the workshop on Assessing with Rubrics

WHAT: Get flex credit by partaking in this hands-on introduction to two methods of assessing with rubrics: holistic scoring and primary trait analysis. A rubric is a set of criteria used to determine scoring for an assignment, performance, or product, such as essays, research reports, portfolios, works of art, recitals, oral presentations, performances, and group activities. Descriptors provide standards for judging the work and assigning it to a particular place on the continuum. What are the advantages of developing a rubric? Number one, we make our criteria precise and explicit to ourselves as well as our students. And we inevitably will evaluate more efficiently than without one since we know what to look for.

In this workshop, you will participate in a "norming" session to create a rubric for group scoring and then apply this experience to developing a rubric for one of your major assignments. Please bring a copy of your major assignment, the basic criteria you consider when you are evaluating it and, if possible, samples of student work in response to your major assignment.

FOR WHOM: Are you interested in strengthening your instruction by making your evaluative criteria transparently clear to students? Or are you interested in exploring rubrics as a direct measure in conducting assessment? Or are you interested in perhaps implementing departmentally-wide assessments? Then this workshop is for you.

WITH WHOM: Susan Andrien, Director of the Learning Center, has used rubrics to evaluate essays as well as led workshops on using rubrics across the curriculum.

WHEN & WHERE: Monday, March 27, 1:45- 3:15 in Room 5131

RSVP: By Friday, March 24, to Karen Wong at wongk@smccd.net or x4369 to ensure that we have enough copies of the handout
