Course Description:
The third level course in elementary Chinese. A continuation of Chinese 112,
with further development on oral communication, reading, and writing skills.
This course covers the basics of Chinese language and culture with emphasis
on practical topics, common sentence structures and vocabulary. (UC / CSU)
Course Content and Student Learning Outcomes:
Instruction in oral communication, reading and basic composition in daily topics:
talking about weather, dining, asking directions, birthday party, seeing a doctor.
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
Speaking: Use oral communication skills carry on conversations with accurate pronunciation and intonation in daily social situations covered in the course.
Listening: Comprehend standard Chinese Mandarin speaking in authentic
listening materials or from daily life situations.
Reading: Understand basic authentic Chinese reading texts with common idomatic usage on personal and social matters.
Writing: Master commonly used traditional characters, comprehend co-
relational simplified characters. Employ basic sentence structures and produce coherent short compositions on selected topics studied in class.
Culture: Describe distinctive features of China, Chinese daily life and cultural aspects.
Homework and Assignments:
Homework and assignments will be on both oral and written (characters and
pinyin). Students are expected to turn in homework and assignments on time to
receive full credit. Late submission will receive partial credit. After an absence,
it is the student’s responsibility to make up a missed homework or assignment.
Quiz cannot be made up unless it was approved by the instructor in advance.
The required hours by arrangement in this class can be fulfilled in a number of
ways, in the Foreign Language Center or at home, listen to recorded audio or
video materials that accompany the textbook, do on-line exercises, or visit
recommended web sites to learn about the culture.
Final Examination:
The final examination will be comprehensive exams covering the lessons
taught in the textbook and the supplementary materials practiced in class. The
final Exam will be held on the date assigned by the college.
Attendance Policy:
Students are expected to attend class on time. Six hours of absences are the
maximum allowed in the entire semester. Three tardies are considered the
equivalency of one absence. Come to the class 30 minutes late will be count as
half absence. If a student is absent excessively, the final grade will be affected.
It is student’s responsibility to drop or withdraw from the class.
*During class sessions turn off your cell phone, and no gum chewing.
Grading Policy:
The final grade will be based on the following:
a. Class participation (20%)
b. Completion of assignments on time (30%)
c. Quizzes (15%)
d. Final exam (35%)

Dishonesty such as cheating, plagiarism, or knowingly furnishing false

Last day to drop without appearing on record: February 16
Last day to declare Pass/No Pass grade option: February 23
Last day to withdraw with assurance of a “W” grade: April 29
Final Exam: May 18 (written); May 25 (oral)
