Course
Description:
The second
level Intermediate Chinese course. Following Chinese 131,
continue to develop Chinese language
skills including fluent oral
communication, reading various authentic
materials, writing composition and
advance Chinese culture understanding
and appreciation. Continue to study
grammar and syntax. (UC / CSU)
Course
Content and Student Learning Outcomes:
Instruction in developing Chinese language skills and
culture appreciations.
The instruction will be in Mandarin Chinese.
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
Speaking: Produce speech
comprehensible to native speakers of Chinese, carry on conversations with accurate pronunciation and intonation in social
situations covered in the course.
Listening: Demonstrate
comprehension of most utterances made in standard spoken Chinese using a wide
range of vocabulary and grammar in practical topics introduced in the course.
Writing: Employ variety
of sentence structures and vocabulary with accuracy. Produce coherent short
compositions in different formats on selected topics and social events studied
in class.
Culture:
Demonstrate
knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture, including major regions,
cities, and events.
Homework
and Assignments:
Homework and assignments will be on
both oral and written (characters and
pinyin). Students are expected to turn in
homework and assignments on time to
receive full credit. Late submission will
receive partial credit. After an absence,
it is the student’s responsibility to make up
a missed homework or assignment.
Quiz cannot be made up unless it was approved by the instructor in
advance.
The
required hours by arrangement in this class can be fulfilled in a number of
ways, in the
video materials that accompany
the textbook, do on-line exercises, or visit
recommended web sites to learn about the culture.
Final
Examination:
The final examination will be
comprehensive exams covering the lessons
taught in the textbook and the supplementary
materials practiced in class. The
final Exam will be held on the date assigned by
the college.
Attendance
Regulations:
Students are expected to attend class on time. Six hours of absences are
the
maximum
allowed in the entire semester. Two tardies are
considered the
equivalency of one absence. Come to the class
30 minutes late will be count as
half
absence. If a student is absent excessively, the final grade will be affected.
It is student’s responsibility to drop or withdraw from the class.
*During class sessions turn off your cell phone, and no gum chewing.
Grading
Policy:
The final grade will be based on the following:
a. Class performance – Attendance and participation (20%)
b. Completion of homework and assignments on time (20%)
c. Quizzes and Project (30%)
d. Final exam (30%)
