Frequently Asked Questions

DURING THE PROGRAM:

How will my child find his/her classes on the first day?
College for Kids staff will be stationed across campus to provide directions and assistance before, during and after classes throughout the 3-week program. Staff will be in bright lime-green t-shirts.

What does my child need to do on the first day of class?
On the first day, your child may report directly to his/her first-period class upon arrival on campus. Students should turn in the signed Emergency Form and Student Conduct form to their first-period teachers. Please have your child bring the Registration Confirmation, Class Schedule and Campus Map.

What areas on campus are supervised?
All buildings with College for Kids classes and surrounding parking lots are monitored by staff members during the program from 1:30-4:50 p.m. Supervision for drop-off and pick-up, however, is only monitored at classroom locations and designated parking lots.

What if my child is absent, late, or I need to pick him/her up early?
Call us at (650) 574-6149 to report any absence from class. If you are picking your child up from class before class ends, please have your child bring a note from you to the teacher at the beginning of class to minimize class disruption
.
What happens if I cannot pick up my child by 4:50 p.m.?
We cannot guarantee supervision after 4:50 p.m. In case of an emergency where you are unable to pick up your child on time, please notify our office immediately.

How do you deal with behavioral problems?
We are committed to providing a comfortable learning environment that is free from disruptions for all of our students. Students who are disruptive will be given opportunities to correct their behavior before they are removed from the program.  Depending on the severity of the problem:
1st time     Student receives verbal warning.
2nd time    Site Director calls child’s parent/guardian to discuss disruptive behavior.
3rd time     Child is suspended or removed permanently from program.  Site Director calls child’s parent/guardian to pick child up immediately. There will be no refund.

Can my child keep his or her cell phone on during class?
We understand the need to communicate with your child. However, we ask that all cell phones be turned off or set to silent mode during class.

College for Kids does not give homework. How do I know what or how my child is doing?
We encourage you to ask your child specific questions. For example, ask to see your child’s work from class each day and what he or she is learning. On the first day, most teachers review the class “syllabus” for the 3-week session so students know what to expect.

We also encourage students to communicate their needs to their teachers, including feedback regarding their classes. Please recognize that each class is geared to a specific grade grouping and is taught to the class median. If your child has a need that requires special attention, please notify us.

What does my child need to bring to his or her sports class?
If your child is playing an outdoor sport, he or she should bring water, a hat and sunscreen. Children should wear shoes with non-marking soles. Tennis students should bring their own tennis rackets and balls.
