Assessment
Read the definition for each Major Skill Category to understand your greatest areas of strength and preference. Evaluate your current career against your report to determine if you are using your strengths in the proportion and degree you would like. In planning your next move, optimize your level of satisfaction by focusing on your favorite skill categories and key skills.

Generalist vs. Specialist - The pattern of your skills will give you clues as to if you are more of a generalist or specialist. Generalists typically prefer using a wide range of skills from different categories in various tasks and activities. Specialists typically prefer using a few Major Role Skills concentrated in two or three categories and like gaining mastery in a few key areas. Be aware of your natural preference in assessing career options.

Skill Development
You can increase your overall effectiveness in your career by gaining experience in your preferred Major Role Skills and then developing your less preferred Secondary and Minor role skills.

Self-Promotion

Use a highlighter pen to identify those skills in your report you are using in the way you like. Then note the skills you are not currently using to optimum capacity. Begin brainstorming new projects, assignments or training classes to increase your competency in these areas. Discuss your ideas with your supervisor to gain support in planning for your development. Skill Development
You may realize you need to develop your skills but are not clear about your motivation. Use the Skill Development Troubleshooting Guide to gain greater clarity about your current career need and gain strategies for accomplishing your goals.

If you feel you have optimized your current Skill Sets and need new skill challenges, identify one or two Skill Sets you would like to develop. Obtain suggestions for skill development in these Skill Sets by clicking on Skill Development Activities.

Once you have gained a level of mastery in a skill, you can challenge yourself by using that skill in a different context (function) or with a different subject matter. For example, you have acquired a high level of competence in "analyzing" consumer-buying trends in the marketing department of your organization. You could apply the same skill of "analyzing" employment and labor information within the human resources department of your organization. Look for new ways to stretch the boundaries of a using your skills.

Self-Promotion
Many positions list job requirements in terms of Skill Sets. You may see an advertisement seeking an individual with "strong communication and leadership" skills. You should research the position in more detail to determine the specific type of communication or leadership skills that are most desired in this position. Research and identify training and educational classes and programs to expand and extend your development of key skills.

Use the Individual Development Plan to outline the specific actions steps for goal achievement.

Exploration
It is sometimes difficult to know whether you will like using or be good at a skill until you gain a level of competency in it. Select one or two "Plan to Develop" skills from your report and look for on-the-job tasks, classes or SkillScan's Skill Development Activities to begin developing the skill. By testing out the skill in easily achievable ways you will know whether you should continue to develop that skill.
